So the father was possessed? Who were the kids that were "inside" him? Why was the crazy guy killing kids and after the family? what did the father find at the end?

reply

I think at the end he found the kids' bodies that the crazy guy had killed and put in suitcases

the movie didnt make a lot of sense to me either but I think it's filled with symbolism, for example that man who was buying his paintings, was he supposed to represent Satan?

reply

Good question, as he mentioned "sacrifice" to the guy. He really loved his paintings, and he called his art gallery "Belial", which is another name for satan.

reply

Wow you're not very bright, are you? All of your questions were answered in the movie.

The crazy guy killed kids for Satan. The reason why he was after the family was because he thought the daughter was special and would be a special victim for Satan.

The father found the dead bodies of the kids the crazy guy killed at the end.

reply

You're so right. Everything was totally explained in the movie.

My impression is that we are mislead to believe that the main characters (Jesse / Ray) are hearing the same voices, while they aren't. The voices Ray is hearing are from the Devil, telling him to sacrifice children for him. On the other hand, what Jesse is hearing would be the voice of God, trying to help him to save both his daughter and the souls of the innocent children that Ray killed.

At the end he finds the remains of the children murdered by Ray, put into suitcases and buried nearby the house. The light changes there and he seems to be under a white light that comes from the sky, like a God's signal. He was successful in his mission: he saved his daughter and he saved the children's souls from the Devil by finding their remainings.

Nice idea but still doesn't make a lot of sense. In what way was God helping him by making him paint those evil paintings, which took up his time, made him neglectful of his family (and daughter especially), which in turn created the main opportunities for the killer to catch his daughter, TWICE!!!!

The film didn't have the courage of its convictions, it alluded to a lot of things which had potential and at some points looked like it was getting interesting, but didn't seem to know how to resolve them in the end, and didn't really bother. The various plotlines like the devil-ish art collector were half-baked and didn't go anywhere, making the film feel unfinished in the end. I wonder if it was cut short and the producers ran out of money or something?

Although it didn't have any bearing on the story as it seemed it would at the beginning, I liked the music, especially "For Whom The Bell Tolls" at the end, but unfortunately it didn't make it a good film.

I see it differently. He became a prophet and was painting events that were already in motion which had to unfold as they did. He wasn't able to prevent Ray from taking her but he was able to ultimately stop him and find all his victims.

reply

His paintings were meant to be misinterpreted for the viewers to think they were evil or from the Devil. But the paintings were manifestations of his visions sent by someone, the white light alludes to God, which were meant as warnings or as a means to use him as an instrument to stop the killer and liberate the children's souls.

I was wondering how exactly the two cops were killed? Did he have his own gun?

reply

I think he smashed them between their cars. Their cars were parked either hood to hood or one behind the other and they were sitting on the bumpers while they were talking and after the screaming when the mom looked out the window the space between the two cars was gone and the one cop was stuck between them. I think he rammed his car into the back end of one of theirs so it rammed into the other and they were between them. It looked like all he brought with him was the gas and the big rock because he finished them off with the rock and only noticed the gun on the ground because the downed cop was trying to get to it when the villain killed him

reply

Cool, that could be it.

This movie is much better than the director's earlier effort The loved ones btw.

reply

It definitely isn't. The Loved Ones is a cult classic at this point.

reply

No it is :-)
