DO ALL THE STORIES CONNECT

I get that 1st and last do although 1st doesnt really have an end, like who was the girl in the photo at the end. still a good film.

reply

The stories minimally connect in regards to location but not plot. The photo in the end is of Mitchs daughter Catherine. He was seeking revenge on the father in the home invasion because the father molested Catherine. That's why he shows him the photo after he stabs and kills him.

Any idea/theory as to why killing the family brought those demon/monsters after them? Maybe they were demons all along? Or did the evil magic of the region just figure these guys needed some comeuppance?

I'm sure there's no concrete answer, because there's not really any evidence of it in the movie, but I feel like people more in tuned with the genre may have some theories.

My roommate said it's because these people are all in purgatory.....and they still have a chance to escape but the guys in the masks went to far when they killed the daughter so they are getting pulled down into hell and so those those monsters are from hell and thats what the ground opening up is..........I think shes right, she said that if you listen closely that the dj says that you can always get right the next time.......I guess those guys didn't get it right hahahaha

reply

Hm, but if it's a whole moralistic thing, what did the girls in the band do wrong that they deserved what they got? Trusting strangers and eating weird meat?

That main girl Sadie abounded their other band member who died, the one she sees in the dream and on her phone, I think.

reply

they left their friend alex to die.

reply

Wow that actually makes a lot of sense!! And how the guy who hit the girl in his car got to leave as if he was never there because he went above and beyond to save the girl! Also the 2 other band mates were getting offered to look young forever like I didn't see them bitching at all lol.

reply

his crime was to use his cell, while driving. his sin was the least severe and after his drastic punishment, his sins were forgiven. i guess it even outweighted the sin and therefore he has gotten the new car.

reply

I didn't see his running the girl over as the 'least severe'. It's no better than drunk driving or the guy in the last part who accidentally (it seemed) stabbed the girl.
The musicians were the least deserving of their fate, or at least their crimes were less obvious. It's never spelled out precisely what happened to Alex and how she might have been saved.

reply

That was pretty much the conclusion I came to as well. They're in an endless loop of some kind and need to get it right before they can leave. The fact the first tale actually happens after the last one in the movie hints at this, and the guy who gets to leave is the one who does what he was supposed to. The DJ was also a clue that something is controlling this and setting it up, since it was omnipresent. Also the highway sign had no numbers on it, which I thought was odd until everything clicked. Even the name of the movie hints at hell being involved somehow.

Actually not a bad anthology movie, i've seen way worse...

"Even the name of the movie hints at hell being involved somehow. "

very good point.

reply

I agree i think you're right. Did you hear the DJ at the end say MAKE SOME MISTAKES, DON'T WORRY YOU CAN ALWAYS GET IT RIGHT NEXT TIME before the masked people show up? HE's talking about getting out of the loop I think. If they do the right thing. Because then like you said "Even the name of the movie hints at hell being involved somehow" so I think the when the ground opens up, that is hell and everything we've seen is in PURGATORY. So those winged creatures come they're coming from hell to take them down since they didn't get it right and made the same mistake too many times in the loop and don't get redemption.

reply

that actually makes a lot of sense, but, in that case, what was Danny's (from the jailbreak part) sin?

reply

the more i think about it the more i think it must be what's going. the main guy in the first and last one got revenge and went to far and killed the blond teenage daughter in the same hallway he gets stuck in the first segment. the girl abandoned her friend the night she was hit by a car and died and that's exactly what happens to her. the driver might have actually done something right this time around so maybe he's let go? and danny is neat because he's a different perspective, i think he sneaks into this purgatory world to break his sister out but she doesn't want to go with him. doesn't that make sense? and then the last story starts with someone else paying for their sin of killing or molesting the daughter but then it becomes about the guy from the beginning. so the cycle continues. and goes on and on and on.

I also agree that Danny was not supposed to be there. I think it is important to note that the bartender kept telling the one woman to "close the door" when she came into the bar for a drink after she finished the phone call with the motorist that hit that girl from the band. I thought it interesting that she didn't close the door all the way and Danny got into this "purgatory". I can't help but wonder if this is the reason he was able to get there???

Very interesting movie, enjoyed and will watch again with a new perspective.

Besides the place they're in being some kind of weird evil Silent Hill Hell on Earth type place, the movie doesn't really give one. But the grim reaper looking things that come out of them are also a play on Leyak, those monsters that show up in stuff like Mystics in Bali. So maybe the whole family was evil (they are in that place after all), or maybe it was the town reacting to them killing the girl, or maybe it's both?

reply

I had picked up on everything apart from the reason Mitch was out for revenge. It pertained to his daughter, we know that from the photograph and his endless chasing in the hotel room.

But what was it that informed you that the man had molested Catherine? I'm aware he had done something to her, but I never picked up on molestation.

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

[deleted]

I think it's just implied that he did something to her, I personally think that he molested and/or killed her.

reply

I thought he may have accidentally killed her, like drunk driving or something, because they did nothing to allude to the Dad being a bad guy. If he was supposed to have purposely harmed a child, you'd think they would have put something ominous about him in there.

reply

[deleted]

I think you're right on with that. I've watched it three times now and notice new connections each time. Like the motel room has the same number as the house in the end. So clearly that's where he's going. And the bar that the bother goes to to find his sister is where the band was supposed to play because you can see their flyer when the woman walks in. And when the guys in the beginning and end kill the first two people it's not a sin but they go to far and kill the daughter so the monsters come from below to take them down to hell. The movie is an endless loop.

probably the death of the mother only meant that they *beep* up and that they were going to start the loop again instead of escaping it like the man who ran over the girl did, but when they killed the daughter, it was decided that they had taken it too far and the monsters were sent to take them down to hell.

then we see that the last guy repents from his actions and accepts his fate, in this moment, the monsters stop chasing him and only seem to guide him to the next loop, which I see as a last chance to escape purgatory.

Outstanding movie !
Those "floaters" can make your hair turn white.
The masks; one looked like Clark Gable. (Shane)
Two people who will never grow old...
Danny, chasing a dream and finding a nightmare.
I thought they were gonna stick the guy in the hospital as punishment.

Yes, the stories connect - through the DJ.

Danny -
Maybe he took the rap for the death of the parents.

The Band -
One gal keeps complaining how hot it is.

FreezeN Over -
Sutter's cash register keeps on looping before finally stopping. And the name of the place; When Hell Freezes Over, anyone ?

HudsonDuster - For all their wars are merry
And all their songs are sad

reply

Yes, I noticed most of that as well. Yes it is an endless loop just like some would expect hell to be.

reply

...he showed him after he stabbed him...but not after he killed him. He wanted the picture to be the last thing the dad saw before he finally died. ??

reply

I was wondering where it said the dad in the last segment molested the other guys daughter also?

Didn't the other guy whisper to his wife before they killed her that her husband was a murderer?

My take on it is that the guy was probably involved in a hit and run with that guys daughter, killing her or leaving her to die. Which would tie in with the middle segment where the guy runs over Sadie. Only he made the right call and does everything he can to save her. Even when it's humiliating for him. Which is why he is not trapped there. His conscience is clean.

A theme which runs through all the segments. Most of the characters are running from something (like that guys sister in the 'jailbreak' segment who killed their parents)......

reply

I replied the same above (about the Dad). Could have been an accident killing the other mans daughter, they didn't make an effort to make him seem "bad."
