Police In India

I am living in Noida for 9 years now. I can assure you one thing, the police here is not equipped or capable of handling murder cases.
Most of the lower tier policeman are corrupt, technically inefficient, and as rest of the Indian police, come from a hardcore male dominant households, so the first question which is asked to a woman who's a victim is - Tu itni raat ko baahar kya kar rahi thhi?

Noida is anyway full of thieves & murderers, and then the police here is so apathetic towards their duties.
When the case broke out, I remember how police was so inefficient, and the journalists were yapping and broadcasting feeds from the terrace where Hemraj was retrieved dead. Even then I was thinking the same - Shouldn't this whole crime scene be quarantined first? Police was absolutely clueless as they were inexperienced & oblivious to murder cases.
As the movie also depicts, the case would have been solved in 2 days if the police had used half of the brains it used to link parents to the murder right away or divert attention to wife swapping thing and all.

Do you think Indian police is at all equipped to handle homicide cases?
SHOULD THE CASES LIKE THESE BE DIRECTLY PASSED ON TO INVESTIGATING AGENCIES?

reply

But wasn't this case also investigated by CBI. If investigation of CBI is not enough then who else is left to investigate?

reply

I think the intervention by media has to be taken into consideration. As is also evident in the film, the whole case was dubbed as "trial by media," plus the intelligence collection was also compromised due to them.

While expecting our law-enforcers to do their job nicely is one thing, the surrounding factors do more harm. What do you think?

reply

Agree completely.

Another angle which I do not like was; fine a CBI officer is retiring but he has unsolved case on hand which he says is solved. He should have at least given a week of extension to file the final report and then retire, he knew his follower is not a good man at least from comments which he made while giving final speech.

I believe Police does not know how and what to do on cases like this. They should be trained and cases like this should be in their study before they join.

Problem is also that if you want to call forensic experts or sniffer dogs then you need to follow such a lengthy process, if some one might request their seniors will reject it saying you are placing too much mind over nothing.

Just see how two fellow policemen were clicking pictures like they were gays totally reflects the actions of police in entire case.

As a serving police officer I would like to respond to what you said

as a nation we are still hung up on socialism and invest poorly in resources

it is not uncommon to have one forensic science officer looking after 7-8 districts

my district in central india had 4 sniffer dogs and money for their diet had not been released since 10 months

i used to get a salary of 45 k and person incharge of dogs 25k..how are we supposed to feed them?

invesitgation was bungled -- correct agree

but actual training in how to conduct investigation is given only to IPS & DySPs
rest all receive little or no training?
why c
crunch of funds
recruitment as vote bank politics

as a nation you would get the police you deserve..not better not worse

reply

Agreed as I had an experience of a case.

I think our country needs to have a strict control over media. More news channel, more reporters, more the competition and more job-surviving TV anchors.

This case was half driven by media and you can see frustration of Irrfan Khan's character when he comes to know that many strong evidences were contaminated or neglected by tier 1 police. Problem is many mid-old police officers look at Forensic Science in a sarcastic-funny way because they chose not to adapt to it over the period of time. And as a growing nation, we still lack the need of high tech equipment.

In this movie, Noida police prematurely released the case in the media convicting the parents as murderers and other false spicy accusations. I strongly think that police should not be allowed to be in media without proper court approval. Then there was a huge pressure by media, socialists on Tandon family. When CDI came close to know who real murderer was, they diverted it towards making what people/media already believed in, for their own reputation. Had they released the first investigation, there would have been a storm over harassment Tandon family suffered.

So, finally both teams decided to close the case as unsolved and leave both parties on bail but the judges did not approve it and you know what happened.

As of my personal experience, judiciary system is a circus. Try not to get into it or it will take a huge chunk of your life.

judiciary system is a circus

Yes, agree 100%. The entire system is a joke. Culprits get away while innocents rot in jail.

Thank you, this is a very interesting and enlightening thread and confirms for me what I thought the movie was trying to say. The tone of the movie, then, was spot-on, very appropriate for all the different aspects involved in finding justice with so many factors involved. I think the movie was very effective and done with great skill.
