Is it good?

I'm curious, because I'm looking for a new show to watch

Tricky question. I liked it.
It's a commentary on social inequality and the fairness of our society and meritocracy. Not hugely deep, but not as shallow as some say. I think most characters are relatable and realistic, although we do not get a lot of explanations about the setting and the society they live in, besides The Process.
Some are saying it's another teen dystopia, but it's not. There are various clichés from the genre, but that's kind of unavoidable.
I suggest you watch episode 1 and see how that goes. Some people are saying it moves too slowly at first, but there's a change of pace in chapter 5. Hope that helps.

I binged it in one day/night. Caught me from the get go and I couldn't stop. I recommend watching it with the Portuguese audio and English subtitles. I watched the first half of episode one with the English dub and it really took a lot away from the show.

I found the English dub great! So glad I didn't have to do subtitles....I thought all the voices and subtle sounds (heavy breathing ect...) matched better than I've ever seen before....but, saying that, I have only recently found this feature?

reply

That was supposed to be a funny emogi..bit forgot it comes out here as a ?....

It's a fantastic series. Not perfect and certainly some left wing propaganda, but acting and storyline is good and hopefully it will have the opportunity to continue the story with another season.

Just finished the first season. Not bad as very low-tech sci-fi, but the leftist propaganda gets laid on pretty thick in the last episode when we discover that "Offshore" values ruthless meritocracy over compassion, community, and even family. Acting is mostly good, even with English dub turned on, except for João Miguel as Ezequiel, who I thought was mostly awful and unbelievable. Not a particularly attractive cast, if that sort of thing matters to you. As an English-born Canadian brought up on British dramas I prefer good character actors to beautiful "stars", but YMMV.

Interesting to see how a morality play differs when the worldview is different than you may be used to. Interested to see what life is like Offshore in the second season, but I won't be heartbroken if season 2 never gets made.

It's not "ruthless" meritocracy. It's TRUE meritocracy. Didn't you listen to his speech at the end?

The founding couple found that heredity was the problem, therefore they put themselves through that so EVERYONE who makes it must face the trials of fire. Also, yeah this true meritocracy doesn't support compassion. It's a MERIT system. Compassion doesn't fit in there. Only the worthy remain. Who's worthy? Well it depends on the standards of the person running the test. It's a running theme throughout the test. Also, yes community isn't an ideal that's very strong. The entire show, people are trying to steal other people's position, EVEN THOUGH, they have no need for money or struggle in life. You can't even pass on your genes so no... there's no sense of community either.

These themes don't just come out in the end. It's the reality of a TRUE merit based system.

reply

Yes, I did listen to that speech, and my statement is 100% correct. From dictionary.com...

Ruthless - adjective: having or showing no pity or compassion for others

The underlying premise of The Process is that compassion and pity should have no bearing on advancement or admission to Offshore.

Oh... and way to go for giving someone asking if a series is good a major spoiler about the ending without warning them.

reply

Crap. That was my first post here. I wasn't thinking. Thanks for warning me. I'll be more careful in the future.

I don't know about your underlying process especially because those qualities were tested in the modified food test.

reply

its not a true meritocracy at all. plenty of people are eliminated arbitrarily or unfairly.

reply

Leftist propaganda?! Propaganda is both a strong word and also an inaccurate description.

reply

Anything that doesn't fit into a neat little box, labelled and accepted as is, is called leftist propaganda by the uneducated, and the inexperienced. Because the Offshore, aka the elite, has problems just like any other so-called utopia in fiction, it's obviously those leftist nutters trying to get in those pesky life lessons about why rich people suck.

reply

How is meritocracy leftwing???

reply

It's really bad :(

reply

I disliked it.

The idea of poor people so poor they can't even sew was my first clue.

And it just got more idiotic as the episode progressed.

I won't watch another episode, but who knows, maybe it gets about 1000% better and becomes decent.

I would definitely recommend trying it out. I really enjoyed it -- it has the same kind of dystopian setting you see in a lot of fiction, but it explores some themes that most things of that kind don't. The tone really varies; some episodes are subdued and emotional, some are mostly flat-out adventure. The style and music are much more interesting than you would expect from this kind of show.

All around, it is a very solid first season. Don't listen to the political complaining on here, and don't try to read modern-day social critiques into it. Just watch and enjoy the story.

I really liked it. I got hooked after the first episode. Had to watch with subtitles (which I heard provides better translations than the dubbed version).
