See this one in 3D if you can...

Just returned from seeing this. The best MI movie hands down. The only niggling downside is that it requires you to have some knowledge of previous movies, particularly the last one, to get a grasp of the complicated double-crosses going on.

That said, as an action movie, the director, Christopher McQuarrie, is one of the few who really knows how to set up sequences that make the most of 3D.

Most directors of 3D movies are usually still stuck thinking in 2D. The 3D is an afterthought that doesn't enhance the movie... one of the reasons, I think, that it hasn't caught on in a big way.

The Paris car/motorcycle chase here is a standout. The director uses unique sliding and low angle shots (a la George Miller) and shallow focus techniques that really put you in the action. The helicopter chase is also fantastic.

I was curious about seeing it in 3D. Ultimately, I did not. While it sounds like it might have been worth it, I can’t say I regret it. I caught it in IMAX several times (also in Dolby Cinema) and by all means the film was made for that format! I simply had the perfect movie experience watching it in such an enormous and high quality screen.

However I do concur, this entry in the MI series is nothing short of stellar. It’s being widely hailed as the franchise’s greatest and most accomplished film for all the right reasons. Yeah, there will always be those that will stand firm and declare the series’ first film the best one (no matter what). To each his own I say. But I, on the other hand, consider the last two MI films superior to the well-directed original in so many ways. Fallout? It only set the bar even higher, as far as I’m concerned. Pure filmmaking greatness.
