Okay, just went thought the entire series again (except #2, because why?), and here are my updated rankings:

Tier One:
MI1
MI5
Super close here. First one has less action, but more "caper" type atmosphere than the rest. If I could pinpoint the singular thing that made 5 as good as it was: Ilsa Faulst. It's been said in other threads, Rebecca Ferguson was perfect in this roll. Perfect fit with Hunt/Cruise.

MI3
MI6
These are both great action flicks. 3 gets the nod mainly because PSH. I was loving 6, just as much as 5 until the end sequence. The helicopter bit was a little loo much, even in this universe. Did love the touch of Max's daughter becoming part of the cast.

MI4
This one is not bad, just an average action movie. Would give it an overall 5. Just kind of there.

I agree, with this, MI4 is forgettable besides khalifa stunt. 1 and 5 are the best though can't decide. 3 and 5 are very solid entries. 2 is crap left in the 2000s.

reply

Agreed on 4. I like it but never understood why it was so acclaimed by critics.

The best mission impossible movie was the first one, directed by Brian DePlama... Classic...

The rest kinda blend into one another... Although I did like Rogue Nation quite a bit... The theatre scene stands out...

Love Palma's direction here. Especially the train scene where Ethan and Claire and meeting Luther and Krieger for the first time. Every time it's someone's turn to speak they lean into the frame and the previous speaker leans out of it. If i remember correctly, the camera hardly pans.

He's great at visual story telling... So many subtle choices that add up to mood and atmosphere and convey meaning...
