Mixed feelings...

Right up front, I have to admit I saw only the second half of this movie. I stopped over a friend's apartment--another friend also happened to be there--and they were watching it. So we sat there and watched, puzzled, as Kyle is desperately trying to find the source of the cries for help (which turn out to be coming from Zack). At that point, my impression was that the acting was pretty terrible--over the top--but I really didn't have the back story.

But the last 20-30 minutes of the movie drew me in as the plot (the reveal) became clear. I think it would have made a better film if it had gone deeper into the cult-like aspect of the scheme rather than the "Oh my God, they're going to kill him!" part that came before. I'm a fan of black comedy, and that's what I got from Kyle's post-testimonial and the footage that followed. So what was "Rebirth"? Was it an Amway-type pyramid-ish scam designed to bring wealth to those at the top? Or was it a sort of religion that used the profits from the sale of the products to gain the cult ever-increasing numbers, and power and domination? Greed or brainwashing? Or both? I would have liked more of that part of the story.

I guess if I had to put a genre tag on this movie, it would be "Thriller-Satire-Mockumentary".
