Karan Johar and gay characters

I fail to understand why would Karan Johar's production has to have a gay character, and he goes thru the hardship of acceptance and finally he is accepted. Why Karan, in all movies you come up with some twist of being a "gay" which is not a twist anymore since somehow I knew someone might come up. I was expecting it to be Rajat Kapoor but there you surprised. I guess he is personally fighting on such issues in his real life, and somehow thru reel life he wants a solace.

Well because no one else is really doing it. And of course it's a personal agenda which is fully valid. I thought the direction in this regard was very well done - not overly sentimental or melodramatic. It's still rare to see a gay character in Hindi cinema that's not a joke (dostana) something sordid (Page 3) or melodramatic so kudos to him.

Absolutely, I agree. It was dealt with in such a sensitive manner, so realistic. Usually, homosexuality in Indian films is dealt with either over the top humor, or too tragically. Here very realistically. It's an important topic which needs to be adressed in India. I loved it when he said: what makes you more upset, the lie or the fact? You could feel the pain both mother and son went through in that moment. This is exactly what happens in families, I can imagine. In the US it's easier to breach the subject. In India, homosexuality is a matter of shame and denial and that HAS to change. So, kudos to Johar.

gay character in Hindi cinema

Glad you clarified Hindi cinema there, because mature depictions of gay characters are there in mainstream movies of other languages. Malayalam movies have been doing it for some time now. The movie Mumbai Police comes to mind.

Some people have got their lives destroyed because of the non-awareness of this issue in our society. What better to way to bring it up and handle it delicately, than in a family drama that we, all indians, love to watch. This is an issue that needs to be addressed in as many ways as possible through our cinema except for the one that shows gays as caricatures or sex hungry people.

You make it look like it's a bad thing, my friend. Well, it's not.

Well, Karan Johar is neither the director nor writer of this film.
