37!

In a row?

This movie is based on a bs lie by the NY tabloid press. First the number who supposedly witnessed it in some way and did nothing was greatly exaggerated. 2nd, there were at least a couple people who called the police. 3rd, the police didn't take the earlier calls seriously. 4th, it was a cold night and people had their windows shut, which muffled what was happening. 5th, after a witness scared the attacker off by shouting down from his window, Genovese staggered into a hall out of view from anyone who might have seen or heard her. 6th, a women exited her apartment and held Genovese until the police and an ambulance finally arrived.

Yep. Two people witnessed it and did nothing, not thirty-seven. Not that that's good either, but nothing like as callous an apartment block full of people. Gave New York an undeserved nasty reputation.

It does say a fictional account. Most films using reality, are based own assumptions and fillers since the only one who know the truth is victims and perpetrators. Also you have to realize people insert themselves into cases so even if it wasn't 37 who actually seen anything or made and attempt to help. At least 37 could have said they heard something at that time while they were doing whatever and the writer takes creative license based on hearsay.
