COLOSSAL 59.5% drop for JWFK. Can it still reach $400M domestically???

Damn, this was a bigger drop than I had hoped for considering the weak competition this week but I guess WOM wasn't as hot as anticipated :( Unfortunately, it looks set in stone that it'll only finish 4th domestically in the Box Office which is a huge shocker IMO. 3 out of 5 entries in the franchise have broken the OW record and the current entry looks like dropping a WHOPPING -38% (250M) from its predecessor.

Should the studio be worried by the downward trend? Where do you see the film ultimately finishing in the domestic market? Should the studio bring back Sam Neil and Laura Dern to re-spark dwindling interest?

Yeap, they should be very worried. They have only made six times the movie budget (for now). I'd be shaking in fear XDDDDDD

Fallen Kingdom

It's appropriately named

Hollywood is the Fallen Kingdom

Dude nobody cares about the US market. It´s gonna reach 1 billion soon so who cares.

reply

Actually the US market is far more important than the Foreign. The gross amount is not the success indicator but the actual studio take from the gross. Studios only get 25-40% of the foreign gross depending on the country. China only gives 20-25% so if a movie makes 400M in china they only get 100M. The studio gets 80-100% of the US opening weekend so if a movie opens to 100M they get 80-100M.

So a movie that makes 100M opening weekend in the US could make more money than it's entire China gross.

But in any case JW:FK is undoubtedly a major financial success either way.

reply

Thanks for the clarification, i´ll give you the benefit of the doubt.

I personally never took this in consideration.

Still for me personally i only really care about the total numbers and not what the studio makes.

Anyway thanks for your reply!

I would like to believe you, but I don't see it. If this is true, then why is so much effort being put into making the movies work in China and profitable in China? You see so much China-pandering nowadays in movies, its become very noticeable.
From hiring loads of Chinese actors to making entire scene's in China or have China be important to the plot. Also many Chinese studios working with American studios. Its all China nowadays. If studios only get like 25% of Chinese box office, then why the F would they invest so much time, money and effort into pandering to the Chinese market?

reply

I don't know if his % are true, but there is little doubt an American film earns a higher % from its domestic markets typically than foreign markets. Some of those markets you have fees with governments, some films have to find a distributing partner and they take their share and then its the theater take itself and that is just a few of the possible financial hurdles. Its the same with foreign films, Chinese films typically make most of its money from China and Asian markets, they roll the dice whenever they try to release something in the US because we don't typically respond the same as foreign markets do to Hollywood films and the potential for loss is high because the take home is not the same. Which is another reason why you get remakes and/or western actors added to films that they want to do well in the west.

And to answer your China question, its because if it hits big..it makes a lot of money there and even with that lower take home you still do better than in most other foreign markets the film gets released in. For instance, Fast8 made almost 400 mil in China alone, even with the low take home that is more profit than in any single other foreign market, for comparison the next highest gross per BOM is Brazil at 41 mil.

reply

These are 2 sources I've found. Both state that the OS BO is less significant but still does count for something. 30% of 50M is still 15 Million you wouldn't have had.

I've just mentally gather more info from various sources and testaments over years.

A list of movies that gross double or near their production budget overseas but are deemed a financial failure or disappointment.

I think the ultimate proof is that movies that are successful financially typically get sequels. These movies had pre-planned sequels that were canceled after their release.

They should 100% bring back Sam Neil or Laura Dern. Same goes for the original kids that played in the first one. More original trilogy characters is what most fans want.

I would be amazing to see all characters come together again to tie it all together.

reply

Cause they would make sense story wise. lol

reply

Claire also didn't make sense story wise in JW FK. Nor did the technician guy. Where there is a will there is a way. These people get paid to make stories up, they can find a way to make it work.

reply

I suppose you could write up a story to bring the original cast back. Shoot even CGI Richard as Hammond. I would find it hard to believe they could come up with something that didn't feel so forced. If you are going to spend that kind of energy just write a good story instead.

reply

Like I said, Claire and Frankin also had no reason to be in this movie. They can make it work if they are smart enough. The fans want it, just give it to them. If you look at the new Star Wars movies, there is no reason why Han Solo would be in TFA. They just wrote the badguy to be his son and BAM, there's a reason now.

Like I said, if they are decent writers they could find a way. I don't care if it feels a little forced.

reply

I think that's a stretch lol. Comparing the Galaxy far far away to Jurassic park is reaching.

Give me a good reason that Dr Grant a paleontologist working in Montana, Elle Saddler a stay at home mother, Ian Malcolm a Mathematician living in San Diego last we saw. Mr Hammond who's actor is past and his character as well and the 2 kids who were Hammond's grand children would all end up in the same scenario together. Oh and all of them have good reason to stay as far away from Dinosaurs as possible.

Even getting Grant back on the island in JP3 was a serious work around.

reply

How is it reaching ? This galaxy far far away is MASSIVE. truly MASSIVE, yet the Millenium Falcon is right on the same planet as our new heroes. Ohh and they so happen to steal it, and ohhhh Han Solo just happened to fly by and see it and capture it. Fuck me all the OT characters in the new movies are completely forced in. I can give you way more examples but I have no interest in arguing about this.

They found a way to get Ian Malcom back in FK, they can find a way to get Alan Grant or Ellie Saddler back too. I don't have to give any reasons, I am not a writer. Its not my paid job to write a story to get them back. I never said I wanted Hammond back, the actor is dead so thats fine. He is confirmed dead in the movies so its impossible to get him back anyway.

reply

Well, because you are not a writer maybe you fail to see how difficult or how stupid it would be to try to get these original characters all back for sequel. No matter how you spin it JP is based in the real world we live in and it would feel absolutely forced to find some reason all these characters would be back in the same scenario.

reply

didn't like the way they used Ian Malcolm here. He was basically just a cameo. This series has kinda moved on from the cautionary intelligence of people like him and Grant and now it's just idiots who did shit without thinking. I doubt the writers of these movies could even come up with the intelligent voices David Koepp gave us in the first film.

Have a short review of this movie if anyone is interested- https://youtu.be/h6L_Jlj8OzM

reply

They made it work in Star Wars, they can make it work in JP.
Have Grant team up with Grady because they both know shit about raptors, I dunno.
You just don't want to see the OG characters, thats fine. But stop making excuses that its impossible.

reply

Who cares? This movie was UTTER SHITE.

reply

And Man and the Wasp is weak competition? Them's fighting words.
