Chris Pratt jumping past the CGI T-Rex's mouth in the truck

This is when they've just taken blood from it in the back of the truck, and they're trying to escape. The lack of conviction and realism from him escaping its CGI jaws is emblematic of all CGI close shaves like this - the climax of the last movie was filled with this yawnfest crap. At least in the original Jurassic Park, those were REAL dino jaws breaking the glass roof and clamping down on the kids in the Jeep, or snorting at Grant and the screaming girl. CGI just does not have the same drama, simply because it isn't really there.

that's one of the reasons why i liked fallen kingdom more than jurassic world. more animatronics again. overall, the fx looked considerably better than in the last movie. wouldn't you agree?

reply

Where? The close-up of Blue and the T-Rex perhaps, when they're moving around in the truck and the actors are around them, but as soon as Chris Pratt tries to escape the jaws of the T-Rex, it's CGI again. That's what I meant.

Come to think of it, in the previous movie when the flying dinosaurs are attacking people and one is shot down and the beak heads towards the two boys and comes to within an inch of their faces, I wonder if that was CGI or practical. I think CGI, as there would've been too much risk with a real dino prop there.

in fallen kingdom, it's a blend of cgi and animatronics, just like in the original jurassic park. the "clamping down on the kids in the Jeep" in the original was cgi as well, even the car was cgi in that shot.

reply

Not so.

If you're talking about the shots where the Explorer is on its roof, when the T-Rex stood on it for the first time and ripped off a tyre, all those shots of the T-Rex and the Explorer were CGi, but when it did the closeup shot of the T-Rex standing on the corner of the Explorer and it pressed down where the Explorer roof pillars started to collapse as it was pressed into the mud, that was full size practical.

The shot of the T-Rex bursting through the sunroof was also practical with the full size T-Rex.

reply

sure, but fallen kingdom delivers far more practical fx than you can expect from modern blockbusters. so why do you complain?

reply

I was referring directly to your post that preceeds mine.

I made no complaint only observations.

reply

Like galahad said, the rex coming through the sun roof was done with a real car and an animatronic dino. In fact, the rex wasn't meant to actually break through the glass, it malfunctioned. The fear the kids exhibited was actually real.

reply

I guess that's why Owen said "Can you believe that just happened?" (or was it "Can you believe i did that?") after he jumped past it's jaws.

reply

That's just an excuse to encourage poor CGI, nothing else.

reply

Looked as bad as Arnold fighting the crocodile back in Eraser.

reply

It was kinda sad because this whole scene was pretty nice because they finally used an animatronic T-Rex. The CGI felt so over the top again, i don´t get why they would put this in this scene.

Quit nit-pick bicthin'!
