A 70s hippie singer who was famous at the time. I only know about him because my dad introduced me to the SNL episodes from the 70s, when the show first started, and he was in 2 of the episodes.
The entire album We're Only In It For The Money is a sarcastic attack on flower power and the hippie movement. Especially the songs Who Needs The Peace Corps?, Absolutely Free (The Track), Flower Punk,[1] and Mother People.
He mocked hippies? Ironic, all things considered. I still loved the skit he did on SNL where he got stuck on Freak Mountain with a bunch of druggies, and they couldn't believe he didn't take drugs himself to find inspiration for his music, lol. xD
In interviews, he sounded fairly pro capitalist, maybe even libertarian leaning to me. Talked about how people should own what they create and things like that, IIRC. I think people assume he was your typical far left artistic type, especially because of his battles with groups like the PMRC.
Good point. He was complex. Nuanced. Due to efforts by the folks in charge of the world today, humanity is being trained to be very one-dimensional, so it's difficult for people today to understand how someone could be so varied in their opinions.
