I read the Paris Wife (loved it) as well and had been going into the stories written about the same time period. The Alice B. Toklas one was good about Gertrude Stein and how she had a myriad of now famous ppl grace (Fitzgerald and Hemingway for instance) her gallery (living/reception room). I came upon this quite by accident and was thrilled. I came to the board today to see what's happening on the continuation of the series and of course was disappointed to learn that I'll have to wait until February 2017 for more episodes. Interesting that you make the comparison of how those greats (Hemingway, Fitzgerald and I'll add Picasso...sure there's others) treated their wives poorly. I wonder that it was their venting or frustration during their creative processes. Then society turned a blind eye to the abuse of women by their husbands, or do you think that it was more because their husbands were famous and entitled their eccentricities? Able to get away with about anything they chose to? Hmm...just has me pondering.
