I haven't read the book, so I have nothing to compare it to, nor did I really know what it was about other than what the trailer showed. Plus I love Ginger Minj (Joshua Allan Eads). Predictable, yes, but it was like most underdog pageant movies and I didn't feel that weight was that big of an issue.
I liked it almost as much as Drop Dead Gorgeous.
As a mother, I loved this movie. I'm not overweight and neither is my daughter and I started bawling from the time Willowdean was doing her "unauthorized" magic act in the pageant. I remember being so proud when my daughter did her first gymnastics show at the age of 5. That lump in my throat was HUGE and I couldn't stop the tears. The same with my son when he started t-ball. I think the weight issue was actually sub-text in this film (and I'm not a deep person at all). Loved this movie!
