Mary Elizabeth Winstead has joined the cast of the third installment of FX‘s Fargo, the limited series from creator Noah Hawley. Winstead will star alongside the other previously-announced Fargo cast members, Ewan McGregor and Carrie Coon.

i've never watched this show's first 2 seasons but if this 3rd season with MEW is new/unrelated to the prior seasons then i'll definitely watch it since she's in it!

Good news! :-)

And it's nice that we don't have to watch the first two seasons in order to watch the third. I saw the movie, of course, but don't know much at all about the show.

reply

so it's definitely true that one doesn't need to watch the first 2 seasons to watch this 3rd season? i hope so! i'm excited to see MEW again on tv!

reply

I looked it up and it said that "Fargo" is an anthology-style show, a different story each season, and while there's a time frame that accords to the film (no idea how that works) the show itself doesn't continue with the same characters from season to season, so I'm thinking it's a good bet.

Maybe it's a good show? I've never seen it, but three seasons and some talented actors kind of makes me think that it's probably not bad.

reply

thanx for the info/clarification iamvox! i hear both seasons of that show are excellent, so it's going to be awesome to see MEW again on such a high quality show!

reply

Yes, it is an anthology show, with only very small connections to each other and the film. For instance, the first season takes place in 2006 and ties up a loose end from the movie, while the second season takes place in 1979 and features much younger versions of a couple of characters from the first season. Both seasons tell their own stories and can stand alone, yet they both offer some of the same tone and quirkiness as the original film. If you enjoyed the movie, definitely check out the series.

Probably one of the best quality shows that are currently on air. Do check out the first 2 seasons - only 10 episodes each. You'll really enjoy it

reply

Okay, I'll give it a shot. I'm always ready to watch good TV. :-)

I'm not the biggest fan of the Coen brothers. I can appreciate their films, but I don't really have any emotional response to them, so it's like I'm not fully engaged. Kind of like Emily Dickinson for me--I can see what she's doing and appreciate it, but her poetry just doesn't hit me emotionally at all. That's probably why I never really paid attention to the show. But heck, I'll give anything a try. Keeping an open mind has led to some nice discoveries for me.

The show is not made by the Coens, but definitely does have some of their sensibility, so you might not like it. I think it is one of the best shows on TV, although it was sad they didn't do a season this year. The first two were off the chart excellent.

reply

The show is Exec Produced by the Coens (among others) so their influence is strong.

reply

For what it's worth, I've seen the movie and thought it was meh, but like you I've never really connected with the Coen Brothers. However I've seen both seasons of Fargo and they are truly great television and I enjoyed both much more than I did the movie.

Also IIRC the Coens produced the series but are not involved with it creatively.

reply

I didn't figure they were involved, but you know how sentiment works. :-)

"Fargo" is probably the movie of theirs I liked the most, except for possibly their segment in Paris, je t'aime (2006).

I also saw that the show had some Emmy nominations. I'll definitely check it out, but it will be a while. Too many books, movies and TV shows! When's a fella supposed to sleep?

reply

Pretty sure the Coens were given a producer credit due to all the material that was "borrowed" from the film. I would bet they have no involvement whatsoever.

reply

Fargo is an anthology sure but it's absolutely worth your while to watch the first two seasons. They're both excellent.

reply

It's an excellent show. The 2nd season was even better than the great 1st one, so hopefully the curve will continue arcing towards greatness - and with MEW in the cast, how could it not?

reply

You really don't need to watch the previous seasons, but you definitely should, they're both great. Fargo is one of the best show on TV right now.

I agree, but I'm sad that this means even less hope for a second season of Braindead.

reply

I think it's possible for her to do both, since each show have 13 and 10 episodes per season and the idea for next seasons would be great, take a look at this interview:

This was announced as a summer series from day one, but this is not a limited series, correct? This is something you would hope to come back every season?

Robert King: That’s our hope. It all really comes down to CBS, but yes, our hope is to return for more years.

Michelle King: Our thinking is that subsequent seasons would take the same characters, [but] have them in a different setting. So for example, if there’s a season two, we’d be at Wall Street. If there were a season three, it would be Silicon Valley. And season four, if we were to get that far, we’d go to Hollywood.

Sillicon Valley and Hollywood would be a awesome setting.

too bad, I barely sat trough first season of that and subsequently gave up on it. Clearly she doesn't expect this to come back, adn I have no intention of watching that

This is great news. Love the description of her character. I just hope it will be important to the story.

What about watching the first two seasons...? It's great TV. Much better than Braindead, to say the least.
