Questions about Episode 3

First question I have is related to the guards cleaning up the mess made by the inmates when they tore up their food trays. The inmate told the camera that they [the inmates] got the "last laugh" when the guards had to clean up the mess after failing to retrieve the food trays the night before.

Questions: Did the guards have no other options for getting that mess swept up? What about bringing in the inmate trustees to do the custodial work? Or, if that's not allowed (and assuming that they can't temporarily relocate the inmates to another area while the clean-up takes place), what about covering their windows so they couldn't have the satisfaction of watching the cleaning process? I'd like to see them do something to re-establish dominance/control/authority after a mini-rebellion.

If none of that is allowed, what about actions having consequences? Maybe the next meal is delivered without trays? If it's a hot meal, it would probably be cold without the styrofoam insulation. What privileges do these Level 6 guys have that could be revoked as a consequence of unacceptable behavior?

Second question is related to the Level 6 inmate wearing sneakers. Haven't I seen somewhere (on other shows) inmates wearing flip-flops? I thought perhaps they wear flip-flops because its harder to hide contraband in a flip-flop and is therefore safer for the guards?

Question: Why do they let the most dangerous inmates wear shoes? Isn't this more dangerous?

I have no idea about punishment for the food tray incident but we as TV viewers are only getting a glimpse of what goes on. Perhaps there was some sort of consequences that we just aren't aware of.

Regarding the sneakers I also was very surprised to see that. I believe other places make them wear flip flops for the reason you suggested but I also thought that they would eliminate shoe strings due to safety issues. I know that in psych hospitals no shoe strings are allowed because patients can use them to commit suicide or harm themselves or others so to me it would make sense to eliminate them from prisons for the same reasons.

Overall I thought it was a great show. Hope they do a season 2.
