All the women playing someone's love interest are light skinned

Why are all these women who are supposed to be someone's love interest light skin? I don't think I will be seeing this crap.

reply

The same reason that a lighter skinned black actress is playing Nina Simone. Colorism exists and it is an ugly, ugly thing.

reply

It really is. Don't get me wrong I like Cassie, Dascha, and Paula but why not mix it up. Brandy could have easily played Terrence J's sister. They you have Letoya Luckett, who could have played a lead as well. She's great at doing romantic comedies, even Gabrielle Dennis, Tiffany Hines,Naturi Naughton, Meagan Tandy and Xosha Roquemore would have been great. All just as beautiful and talented. Vicki Jeudy, the list is endless. Actually, what would have been daring is having Lupita N'Yongo as the lead.It would be nice to see her do comedy.

reply

You're right. There is not one single dark skinned Black chick in this movie - except for Brandy. The lead is also Mestiza (not that I have anything against Mestizas with Black men). It's like we don't even exist in la la land unless we're fat.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that they're implying the only way you can be pretty & Black is if you're light.

The young lady Dana, I believe was her character name, was darker than the other characters. The young lady London's character tried to set up with male lead. In the end they show the two of them meeting up I that coffee shop.

However, point well taken and it was hard to not notice the lack of medium to dark skinned actresses.

I would have liked to seen more medium to dark skinned on lead roles. IMO

This was very noticeable when I saw the film. It's actually noticeable in a lot of films. It seems like they often cast light-skinned black actresses when the black female character is in a relatively positive relationship with a black male character on purpose. If they're cussing each other out or not very loving towards one another then you more often see chocolate on chocolate. At least in TPM it's implied that Charlie ends up with the lovely dark-skinned Tammi.

When I saw the previews I was thinking the same thing. Too often dark skinned women are left out or made to be the loud, fat, mammy type in these movies. I think now dark skinned black women are finally getting a clue. Stop supporting movies, tv shows or magazines that don't uplift you.

I also noticed when the leading man was heartbroken and dejected he had a darker-hued girl in his bed. That was a disgusting display of coloristm in our community. Like the only time he wanted to sleep with the dark girl was when he was out of his mind drunk. And she happily went along with it until the next morning when he was ignoring her.

I guarantee that a black man was in charge of casting this film. Black men are absolutely obsessed with exotic light-skinned girls and it starts at a young age. I really feel like men are behind colorism and black women need to start looking elsewhere for love and respect. Who wants to feel like they aren't good enough all the time? The messages are everywhere and this movie was no exception.

I love Paula Patton, Lauren London and the girl from Orange is the New Black. But they should've mixed it up with the skin tones to send a more positive message to all of the young black girls watching this movie.

Casting By

Kimberly Hardin
Natasha Ward

After I read your comment, (I thought the same thing re: the casting), I checked it out. The two names above are the credits for casting.

it makes me wonder ....they could have done better IMO.

reply

Well, I shouldn't be surprised. Women, whether white or black or whatever, are just as guilty of succumbing to the rules of colorism. Slightly OT but you wouldn't believe the crazy comments on a reality TV-focused gossip site going on right now because of the colorism/racial issue that exploded on RHOP. I got banned because of my comments offending people who don't want to hear the truth or open their eyes to the ugliness of colorism that is prevalent in the black community. It's crazy to me that white people really claim that light black women are white because of having what they describe as predominately white features. They really did claim Beyonce until she came out with Formation!

(Some) White folks claiming Beyoncé as white?? Really!!? I read stuff online and such, BUT did not realize some whites are actually that un-intelligent that they would claim her as white! IMO that is really absurd and I question how much these particular whites really know about History.

Surely the educated ones know better one would hope!

I don't watch any of the Real Housewives shows. RHOP? which one is that?

Blacks come in all shades from Light skinned to, medium, Brown, and Dark, Good grief! I thought this was factual info!
Formation, I loved the video and was glad she used her platform to speak out on a topic/issue that (some folks in particular some whites, are uncomfortable discussing).

I agree with your comment re: some women and colorism, and how they are just as guilty. It is rather sad and Ridiculous! As for you being banned due to your comments, I say to that, "Find another platform and Continue to speak out on what you know is truth! Unless we/folks are willing to hear the truth, we will remain Stuck in a place where we have no business being stuck!

Look at the credits, casting was done by two women. Probably black women: Natasha Ward and Kimberly Hardin. Black women are just as colorist as black men, stop trying to put it all on black men.

reply

That is so true. Even within our community, subconsciously we tend to think that light skin equates beauty. Fortunately, it's slowly changing bc we are learning to appreciate our own beauty. We come in all colors and we are beautiful. Why not embrace our beauty instead of tearing down our race.

reply

I agree. Black movies have no problem casting dark skinned men as leads, but the women always have to be light skinned and/or multiracial. I passed on seeing this movie. Has a dark skinned woman been cast as the "pretty girl" since House Party?

reply

No, just brown black women like Taraji and Kerry if we are talking about romantic comedies or thrillers. However, Viola Davis just co-starred in something with JLO last year. I don't think it did well.

If you watch music videos by African American artists, the good girls are usually light skinned whereas the bad girls are usually dark skinned.
