Were whites really this condescending?

Maybe some but the way the show portrayed whites in this movie is like they don't know what they're doing and just fumbling around until a black lady has to speak. That can't be right, can it? Or maybe its just that whole division that's incompetent whites or something... or just black propaganda.

You'd think they'd all be more focused on getting to space and then to the moon to be worrying about anything else cause the Russians.

reply

Yes they were. Warner Von Braun often spoke out about this at the rocket factory in Alabama. He was perplexed by the attitudes whites had against blacks.

reply

Braun was a nazi

reply

These aren't 'rednecks' but they still grew up in and internalized a culture which said blacks were different than whites. They are grappling with how to square off needing the 'group' for special assignments--vs the cultural etc biases which say that these same women are inferior. Certainly it is awkward. And very unfair. This is why it frustrates Katherine and she does snap.

reply

Yes. Considering that this film represented the 1940's - 1960's. Things were a lot different then towards people of color.

reply

The movie writers just made up shit to promote their agenda. It wasn't in the book.

1. NASA, like all federal agencies, was desegregated in the 1940s
2. The most dramatic scene in the movie never happened
3. Dorothy Vaughan became a manager in 1948, not 1968, and Mary Jackson petitioned the segregated city of Hampton early enough in the 1950s that she earned her degree in 1958
4. Every character who expresses racist or sexist attitudes in the film is a fictional character.

>> NASA, like all federal agencies, was desegregated in the 1940s<<

Well, the NACA perhaps in the 1940s.

NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) was NASA’s predecessor. NACA was dissolved into NASA in 1958 when NASA was formed.

Yes, if people do their research they will discover that you are correct.

they'll *confim* it you mean.
Thats gotta be the most intelligent well written post i've seen on this board!
its got 4 separate , numbered points , each giving specific information with names and dates etc
and two links to sources of info.

Compare that to the usual ranting about Agendas and propaganda ( like the OP)

reply

It's Hollywood. It's almost always about agendas and propaganda. And it wasn't a rant (if you can even tell the difference), more a curiosity and questioning about whites or those in NASA (who were majority white) and why they're portrayed the way they are in this movie.

reply

You're right it wasnt a rant . It all seemed very articulate and interesting until i got to the word "propaganda" .
Then i just thought "here we go ...."

I'm not saying this is you but: the word propaganda has been hijacked by bigots who use it to describe whatever they dont like.

2. The most dramatic scene in the movie never happened

Which one? I assumed it was John Glenn asking for her verification to fly, but the link says that actually happened, word for word.

I've encountered a lot of abusive people at my various workplaces. There is usually somebody who is trying to piss on you or undercut you. A certain percentage of your co-workers would enjoy watching you get fired and many bosses get a thrill out of chewing people out. I believe your co-workers will often treat you bad regardless of your race.
