Octavia Spencer does not deserve an Oscar nomination for this role...

at all. There. I said it.

Whew....I'm glad you finally told us what you thought. I was starting to wonder!

reply

You're right! But in all fairness none of them do. This wasn't an acting movie if that makes any sense. Everyone gave solid but not extraordinary performances,Janelle came the closest! It was more about the story being told and giving these women a voice.

reply

That's just my thought!

reply

I think none of the actresses deserved a nomination because like most of you said it wasnt an acting chop movie, it was more about opening up a whole new story for people to know about without stressing the acting. Everyone did solid performances but nothing was mindblowing or oscar worthy.

reply

I agree with this. HF is a feel-good movie that introduced a piece of history that few of us knew about but should know and now we do. So, including the acting, the film was good for what it was.

That scene when Katherine (Taraji) flipped out when she was called out about going to the bathroom though gave me chills. That was powerful. Not Oscar-worthy just for one scene but that was amazing. I was also impressed by Janelle (sp?) as I had never seen her act & only know her as a singer/songwriter.

reply

Totally agree. If that was the case, Taraji was much more remarkable.

I really liked this movie, but I was baffled that Octavia Spencer was nominated. I was, however, blown away by Janelle Monae's performance. I think many voted for Spencer instead because Monae's the new girl. With that being said, I think Monae deserved a nomination.

I love Octavia Spencer but I feel like she was wasted in this movie, I don't know if that just the part, or what... Taraji's Timbuktu bathroom scene was great, I felt it, but, like a lot of people on here, I would've givin the nod to Janelle Monae - She was fantastic!!! Every single scene she was in, she owned it. It was all about Janelle for me.
Even Kirsten Dunst... I didn't even know it was her for a good chunk of the movie, at one point I even said, "Hmm... that lady kind of looks like Kirsten Dunst.. nahhh"

If life gives you MELONS, then you probably have DYSLEXIA.

I would've given a nod to Taraji over Octavia as well. But I agree that this movie wasn't really much of an acting showcase. Everyone did a fine job, even Kevin Costner.

reply

I would agree with the OP. This role was not Octavia at her best, which I would say is the scene in the movie with Billy Bob Thornton wherein she indicates that she had bowel movement problems that lasted for a week.😉

reply

I agree. I thought Janelle Monae deserved the nomination more than she does.

reply

Yeah, I don't understand why she was nominated.. I don't know whether it was a reaction to all the fuss last year about all of the nominees for oscars being white but she didn't do anything special in this movie.. as others have said, if anyone from this should have been nominated, it should have been Taraji.
