It should have been funny, but the excessively grim tone canceled whatever humor could have been had.

The story seems to be intelligent and well written. The dialogue and the flustering situations they get into are funny and interesting. Going by the script alone, it works in theory.

However, the director overdid the dark tone and dead-pan style. I can't help but think had he taken a lighter tone and made it more like, I don't know, an episode of Malcolm in the Middle, it would have been less artsy, but it probably would have worked better. Maybe cast Rob Scheider as Lenny, maybe cast Terry Crews as Hitch.

What's puzzling is the writer also directed the film, so it's not like the issue was with interpreting the script. When the writer is also the director, it's as close to the author's intention as it gets.

It could have been a better movie.

The grim tone is pretty much required for black comedy. I think it could have been more grim, personally.
