The Sense of an Ending

Saw this at a sneak peek yesterday. Intriguing study of memory. Critics so far have focussed on the fact base but I think this is more about the impressions one has (hence "a sense") of causes and effects of past events that form our interpretation of our own histories.

Its also a story of how relatively insignificant events can have a devastating impact that reverberates through generations.

Absolutely... the themes of time and memory and our subjective perception of both and how malleable they are are all major themes of the story

If you liked the movie, you'll love the book it's based on... It's a short novella of the same name... can be read in a day, or in two if you don't have time...

It has the same name and is by Juliane Barnes... he's good

Thnx for the reccie. Read it. Excellent. Loved both. We are are going to be seeing more of these memory and sentiment journeys aimed at boomers - particularly out of the UK. The meaning of life and did mine add up blah blah blah. Just screened "On Chesil Beach" at Tiff very similar themes. Not as good.

Yeah, I really think the original book by julian barnes is a big reason why the movie was good. He nailed it, interweaving the big themes with an entertaining plot. I'm in my 30s and thought it was done really well in the film.

There is a lot of good writing around about these themes, i hope filmmakers try to tap into it in a cinematic way, rather than just relying on sentiment and appealing to a demographic.

I usually don't watch series, but there is a good four-episode mini-series called Olive Kitteridge. Also based on a book (i havent read it though). Also deals with the same generation, but with a very different mood and story. Surprisingly for a series it has a lot less plot, but deals with darker themes of that part of life and has some pretty complex and flawed central characters. Great acting by the leads. it felt more like a four hour movie then a tv series. Very unsentimental and a bit dark as well, which we don't really see as much nowadays.

This could be an interesting trend in movies, even though there will be some very bad movies of this type as well ;)

Yes we enjoyed that too Frances McDormand as I recall.

Try Chesil Beach when it's released,

Loved Olive Kitteridge as well. She was great in her role..

I am a bit confused if this film, The sense of an ending, was meant to be vague about the paternity of Adrian Jr. I didnt get the feeling it was Tonys, although as the movie emphasizes on, our memory and the history we write for ourselves can cloud. Remember when Tony was sure that Jack, Veronicas brother, was friends with Adrian, and thats how Veronica and Adrian met? Well, he was corrected by his other buddies at the diner. That wasnt at all how they met. So I wonder, is he rewriting history, but not meaning to? If he never slept with Veronica is one thing, but if he did, the child couldve been his. My thought is that Adrian killed himself for a reason. And sleeping and impregnating the mother of Veronica, may have pushed him right over the edge. Thoughts?
