Thoughts?

I've only seen bits and pieces and will watch the whole thing this weekend but for those who watched it all what did you guys think of it?

reply

I really enjoyed it for a lifetime movie. The dark hair gave her a kind of classically modern creepy kid look but her natural blond hair would have worked too. She would have had the same cutesy look as the original bad seed. A lot of people are going to say the new bad seed cannot top the original but this movie is a lot more interesting overall. More open and more scenes as opposed to the original where the filming is almost done in one room. A little disappointed the movie dropped the backstory but maybe they just thought it would not have fit in the movie time run.
The only thing I hated in this movie was the music group playing over a end pivotal scene. Also loved the twist at the end. Oh one other tiny thing that does not bother me but makes me wonder why. They changed the names of all the characters. Now I get why they changed the name of rhoda that name just does not fit these days. But I have no idea why they did not call the father Chris and the aunt Monica?? Also why couldn't the teacher be called Mrs. Fern?

reply

Thanks for your take, Stringey! Unfortunately my own On Demand service is screwed up so I have to catch the movie whenever it airs again. I've seen the original many years ago and remember liking it.

What did you think of the '85 remake?

reply

The 85 remake lost something. The actors didn't seem to be that into their roles as the original. although it did hold true to the source material more than the original.

reply

There were some good things in the 85 remake especially the depiction of the mother's nightmares. And while I thought the mother was well acted the girl was not great. That and I guess the direction failed to bring suspense to the fact there was something off about her. The new remake on lifetime did a great job of building suspense even before she is seen about to commit a murder. Showing facial expressions set to the right mood music for example. The opening scene also shows the dichotomy of her well mannered and cultured exterior against her inner dark nature.

reply

Haven't seen this newest one yet. This board was the first time I heard about it. Guess I'll be checking it out.

reply

Thanks for the answers. I saw the ending of the '85 remake years ago on Lifetime. I'll have to look for the whole thing on YouTube.

reply

I'm really disappointed I missed it. The first review here reinforces that. I've been making mental notes to catch it due to ads I've been seeing but got seriously distracted. I've experienced this before and I'm sure I'll get another chance eventually. Just going to have to pay closer attention to Lifetime for awhile.

I saw it on stage when I was younger and have always wanted to see a film version.

reply

I never saw it on stage but saw the original movie. From what I know the stage script is very similar to the original movie. I will say this the remake deviates a lot from the script and movie Mostly in a good way however. Like I said many many different settings and locations than the play and the movie make it more interesting. The girl in this remake does her own interpretation on her acting. Very different in her responses to things than the movie. She seems sinister just in a different way than Party McCormack in the original film.

reply

I haven't experienced a strong enough desire of the original movie to do a serious search for it. I just thought I might discover it on TCM some day.

This is the ad that alerted me to it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Wp_yjdxfK4
I've surprisingly discovered some pretty good movies on Lifetime before.

reply

Lifetime does make good non-"so bad, they're good" movies from time to time. Just as long as they're not biopics. Those always fail miserably.

reply

If you have On Demand you should be able to watch it for free.

reply

Thanks for the tip. I do have On Demand and just did a cursory search. I'll try again later. It would be cool if I could find it for later tonight.

reply

You're welcome. :)

reply

I did a much more thorough search and it's just not on there. Just gonna have to wait and watch for a re-run.

reply

Did you go into channel search and then select Lifetime. If you have not searched through that way try that.

reply

You know I honestly would like them to do a follow up movie of this newest version of the bad seed. I have always been interested in how the bad seed would be later in life. The next movie could take place maybe ten or fifteen years from now. Since she seemed to be terrified of the idea of the electric chair it could end with her finally being found out and sent to the electric chair. She would be living in the state where they use that method.

reply

Yes, I specifically looked at Lifetime On Demand and every other category it could possibly appear in. In the midst of that search though, I discovered a movie I hadn't heard of in years, rewatched it and completely enjoyed it once again.

reply

What movie was it?

reply

Macon County Line

reply

Looks good. :)

reply

It is imo. This second time around it revealed to me what a creative, multi-talented guy Max Baer Jr. actually was, for he was the driving force with the project.

reply

Finally discovered it unexpectedly while channel surfing tonight. I think the 6.1 rating is accurate. It was very predictable with each murder being obviously telegraphed. The most interesting aspect for me was the relationship dynamic, mutual animosity between Emma and Chloe. Mckenna Grace had a Wednesday Addams quality about her and was well cast.

reply

Glad you were finally able to catch it, dlb. :) It's been nearly a year since my last post here and I still haven't seen it yet. I had a lot going on since then, but seeing Rob Lowe on another show sparked my memory and I'll check it out soon. McKenna is on a Sabrina, the Teenaged Witch reboot so it looks like her career is moving on up. :)

reply

I agree she did have a Wednesday Addams vibe about her and it worked. Funny things is that might have been coincidence and she may have originally been intended to be blond. I read that while she was filming this she was also involved with Haunting of Hill House where they had her with darker hair.

reply

Have you seen the original yet? It's very good. A classic. Creepy, but a classic.

This is the first I've heard of it being remade. If it's only a 6.1, I'll pass.

reply

Same, I think I'll take a pass. I saw the original when I was about 8 or 9 years old. Certain scenes are burned in my memory to this day, particularly the ending.

reply

Same for me. The ending, and Leroy being burned to death in the celler.

reply

Oh yeah, definitely. For me, it's one of those movies that surprises you with how dark it actually is given the year it was made. I assume anything from the 1950's will be like the Cleaver's, and then, BAM! Not so much haha.

reply

It is surprising something this dark was made in the 50s. The ending, 😳

reply

I discovered it available on TCM a few months ago but the timing was off for me then.

Actually, I remember it from my youth when I saw a local stage production of it. My high school wrestling coach played the part of her father which is what compelled me to see it.

reply

Ah, too bad. I'm curious what you'll think of the original film.

reply

I watch TCM often. I'll keep that in mind when I get another opportunity.

In the meantime, I finally got a copy of At Eternity's Gate from my local library. I might just watch it later tonight. I'll give you my impression of that if you like.

reply

Let me know when you've seen it.

Ditto At Eternity's Gate! I think you're going to enjoy that one :)

reply

Will do.
