Exactly how are they cramming the novel into a two hour movie?

I have a feeling this movie will only cover the beginnings of Anne's time at Green Gables, as the actress is very young to be playing a teenage Anne and cramming the entire novel into a two hour made for tv movie just doesn't seem feasible.

I recall back in 2012 reading of a 13 episode television series of Anne being in the works . Is this 2 hour television movie the result of the previous efforts?

reply

I believe so.

I don't know why they are even bothering. It isn't like modern day special effects are going to improve on a period piece that was actually FILMED on Prince Edward Island, or on casting like Kathryn freaking Hepburn. I realize it was a Canadian production and all but still, trying to get that story down to 2 hours is kind of missing a lot of story.

the good news is that the 2017 CBC series being created, written and executive produced by “Breaking Bad” writer Moira Walley-Beckett and produced by Miranda DePancier (Josie Pye from the 1980s CBC series) will be 8 episodes. or at least that is what CBC have ordered and is to begin production this spring so we should start hearing more about it. the title is not anne of green gables, simply ANNE

FALSE STATEMENT. Kathryn (sic) Hepburn is not listed in the credits. Also, most of the original series was actually filmed in ONTARIO. The only PEI shots were ocean scenes.

This new version uses the same locations as the old miniseries (i.e. Ontario and PEI).

Okay, this movie was released on Blu-Ray somewhere already. And I watched it. So I can say...

You are correct. It gets up to Anne being forgiven for Diana's intoxication, then adds a couple things to make a new ending midway before they'd have to recast Anne or wait to film any more.

As for what was added to the plot...

It adds at least two new episodes with Anne going tobaganning and breaking through some ice, only to be rescued by Matthew, and Marilla writes to the orphanage to get Anne relocated, the movie ending with the orphanage writing back with a train ticket for Anne to go to a family in a city. While they initially send Anne away, Rachel Lynde takes Marilla to the train station to retrieve Anne.

What we see and what we seem are but a dream. A dream within a dream.
