i loved this movie so much! I was crying/laughing the WHOLE time, can't wait to find a dvd copy and watch again with my friends. It was so genuine.

You should definitely watch the 1985 miniseries (if you haven't). This pales in comparison.

This was a nice movie, lovely to see the high def colours etc, but definitely watch the 1985 version

I don't know why there's all the hate for it, I thought it was a fresh take that was very moving. I have 2 complaints: It was a lightening fast pace compared to the 1985 version but had to be with an 85 minute run time. The one thing that really ruined it for me was Anne's ever changing freckles. Don't watch at 1080p!

I have to admit that as a sixty something male I am not the intended audience for this film but I really loved it. Having seen all the comments about the 80's version being far superior I tracked down some scenes on YouTube and have to say I was not very impressed. Megan Follows Anne seemed rather cold and a bit of a brat and showed none of the warmth of character that Ella Ballentine did. Having said that I only viewed about 10 minutes of it so probably not enough to form a serious conclusion. At the end of the day if we all agreed on everything it would be a boring old world.

Absolutely agree with your last statement! Megan's version never struck me as being cold (unless she was being cold to Gilbert! :D) or bratty. Idk how to word this next part because I don't want people to think I'm insulting the Megan version because that's the one I prefer the most. Megan's Anne struck me more as being over the top* and drama queenish*.

*Not an insult to Megan or to the character. I think it added a lot acting the role out to have those qualities tbh.

Sometimes I wonder if prejudice comes into play when it concerns something like movies that have other versions. I had decided to give the 2016 version a try but I was going into the movie with a prejudice attitude that came from the 4th Anne movie they did a few years ago. "I'll be so disgusted with this pile of *hit that I'll end up turning it off after 10 minutes." I watched the whole movie and was surprised I liked it as much as I did. I still prefer the 80s version best of all though. Now think of the people that like the 30s version of Anne. Do we have anybody on here that watched the 30s version first? What did everybody else think of any other Anne movies after that one?

Peoples tastes are different and it wouldn't surprise me if we do have a few people coming in and saying "Yeah, I LOVED the 30s version and thought Anne Shirley did a better job with the role than the other versions I've watched."

I think I understand what you're saying about Megan's version of Anne. It was so much more wide-eyed and overly dramatic. And I think that perfectly captured the spirit and character of Anne.

I just watched it on PBS and I also enjoyed it. Yes a tad rushed... condensed into a 90 minute movie but knowing that going in, its not really fair to compare to the series. For me, it's just such a great story, one of my favorite childhood books and I thought this was a sweet version, glad I did not listen to Grinch's on this board and read your post, which convinced me to give it a try.

I didn't expect to like it, since I'm such a fan of the 1985 and 1987 series starring Megan Follows. but I ended up falling in love with this version as well. it's just as good in it's own way. Ella makes a great Anne. and the whole movie had a terrific cast as well!

reply

Me too, can't wait to watch it again.
