Drones?

How is a light weight drone going to have enough force to drill into another bot? Unless they change the rules and allow drones to carpet bomb, I don't see how they will be useful. Can anyone think of a weapon you can put on a drone that would actually cause damage?

reply

In theory if the main bot was a spinner, had an axe-like weapon or anything else that could cause cracks in the opponent's armour, a drone with a flamethrower might be able to sneak in some damage with flames. But in reality it would never get much chance to do anything. Not to mention that subtracting the weight from the main bot to accommodate a second one makes it weaker and it never really worked all that well in the long run.

reply

You're right, in theory sound cool in reality it doesn't work. Yet somehow they still did it.

reply

I think ABC partially funded some of these bots. ABC wanted something cool like drones so if you could submit a design with a drone you had a better chance getting picked.

reply

I just don't see a logical use for them. Drones are slow and hard to maneuver, so you'd have to stop your opponent in some way so the drone can fly over and get into position. And if your able to hold an opponent in place that long, why not just have another weapon already on the main bot to do damage immediately?

Just don't see the point.

If you buy a ticket for a remake, you are the problem, not Hollywood.

reply

They thought it would be cool, it isn't

reply

Not really, no. Having a flying unit that has to physically engage a ground unit to be effective is against the reason of having a flying unit to start.

Though I will admit I did have a brief thrill during that rumble when the drone's shadow goes by. Looked ominous (even if it wasn't)

Effective or not it just adds something for viewers to see (and maybe get trashed). Plus, who knows, somebody might cone up with a useful drone.

reply

Drones would be better off tying to block the view of the other driver IMO
Row well and Live,41

reply

That maybe against the rules sort of. Its been years since I read them, I once thought I was going to build a bot, you can't deploy anything that is specifically designed to block the view of the opponent.

reply

The drones don't have precise enough control to be effective. The only time I can see a drone working is when the other bot isn't moving, is pinned, stuck, or malfunctioning. A drone is never going to be able to do anything to a bot that is mobile and good luck threading that needle. It's an exercise in futility.

reply

Here is something interesting.

The rules from years back allowed flying bots. At the time they expected them to use something like a balloon or tiny zeppelin.

reply

A zeppelin, do these people not know any history? Watching a mini Hindenburg burst into flames during a fight might actually be fun to watch. Oh the humanity

reply

A team should do it just as a joke.

reply

Oh the humanity

Too soon, dude.

haha

joen0411; It seems to us that drones would only work if they could drop a net or have a EMP weapon.
