Michael Cera too expensive?!
That's the vibe I get from this kid less than 5 mins into the show.
I'm reminded of Scott Pilgrim and Knives Chau.

Funny I was thinking the same thing. The casters were probably thinking "Man, if only Michael Cera was 10 years younger". I'm sure the kid is a decent actor, but it is so hard not to see Michael Cera in everything he does. More Arrested Development than Scott Pilgrim. But the Asian love interest definitely a nod to a SP vibe.
shareActually, this "kid" is older than Michael Cera!
shareMichael Cera was busy doing DRUNK HISTORY for scale.
Bored now.
He ruins the show. It's like ep 9 and he' STILL the *beep* part. He's not even funny, just sad. Like, embarrassingly bad. A poor man's Cera.
Ep 9 has a perfect example. When he yells out 'freak'... Cera would have killed that part but again - he just comes off as sad.
I think you're really missing the point of Alangalon. He's trying so desperately to fit in that he doesn't fit in. If he'd "killed that part" it wouldn't have worked. It was meant to be sad. You were MEANT to watch it and go "Oh, damn." Because he's trying really really hard, and that's why he's failing to fit in.
You should probably take some advice from a little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. Remind yourself it's just a show, and you should really just relax.
Alangulon actor is fine. He's supposed to be a bit awkward, a bit face palmy. He's not supposed to be geek cool, although he has his geek cool moments.
I think the actors do a great job.
