Makes No Sense

Katherine is competent at her job.

Danny is a drug-addicted, slovennly, incompetent slacker and liar.

Katherine used to be Danny's boss and sees how useless he is.

Danny is the likely candidate to be fired and Katherine would be put in charge and get the programs in place and probably get promoted back to London.

So why on earth would she expend any effort to help him?

She wouldn´t be put in charge. She was already dismissed from London main office, they relocated her with all the other useless staff, probably because of her personal problems. And she said that they've been looking for an excuse to shut down this Northampton place. So she would be fired along with Danny.
