Oh my... Ben Elton has sold out

He's actually gone and made a second series of "When the Whistle Blows", only this time set in the 16th century.

Stealing a living from the BBC!

I was thinking of posting something similar. You've got to wonder if Liza Tarbuck got déjà vu and concluded the same.

So Elton didn't sell out years ago when he started writing west end musicals?

Gosh the phrase "Selling out" has outworn it's welcome.

Whatever it means to you, it means to me writing something that no-one wants to buy, no-one wants to watch except a small coterie of snobs and critics who perceive themselves to be somehow intellectually superior to the masses.

As if being popular makes it somehow worse. Give me mass appeal over cult status every day of the week. Occasionally something will get both and bravo to them but there is no shame in writing something that a lot of people like. It's amazing how often something that starts off with mass appeal and is routinely sneered at eventually becomes a national treasure. Otherwise we will all disappear up our own backsides trying to work out what is "Worthy".

Ben isn't a 21 year old student anymore, he has a family, needs a pension and needs to make a living. What on earth is wrong with that? Life in the strata that people like Ben operate in isn't cheap. I don't feel sorry for him at all but I certainly don't think he deserves one iota of the derision and scorn that some people somehow feel entitled to shower upon him....or his work.

I don't disagree lilactime, I think you replied to the wrong person. Perhaps I should have used inverted commas when I referred to 'selling out'

I actually read that gag of "When the Whistle Blows" somewhere else but this has shaped up well to be a pretty good sitcom.

It's that man again!!
