I was thinking the same thing, except maybe not as severe as a court order. I imagine that her sister was comfortable enough with her being a reference in her stand up routine, but maybe the prospect of having an actor portray her on screen in a higher profile Netflix show was a bit much so Maria respectfully made her into a fictional "best friend".

I watched all the episodes and I completely missed this. You mean that wasn't her sister on the show, but a "best friend"?
yea, I think technically Susan was meant to be Maria's "sister". She's supposed to be her best friend all her life and I guess there's been references where Maria's parents have considered Susan to be family.
