Loved the first two series, very very good. However, with the exception of the excellent episode ‘Aberfan’, S3 has been dismal! Most of the new cast are not nearly as good as their predecessor‘s and the historic storylines chosen are slow and boring.
I’ll keep watching though, this is quality viewing and I’m looking forward to watching the new S4.
I quit watching the show in S3. Aberfan was the high point of the season for me and I dumped it after the Phillip navel gazing episode with the astronauts.
I really struggle with S3. Outside of Aberfan I didn't find any of the storylines very engaging and too many episodes asked the viewer to relate to the anguish of the Royals.
I returned to the show in S4 and it is much better. Mostly because it puts the right perspective on the Royals and has more interesting historical events.
Just an obvious dip in the writing then. Yes S4 does look good, looking forward to it.
shareI'm on season 3 now and I don't think it's as bad as I've been told but I definitely see why people don't like it. It's hard getting use to a colder queen Elizabeth. Where in the first 2 seasons you saw more of what was going on behind her decisions and now she is being positioned into a lesser role for the younger cast to take over. That's not a bad thing as in these time periods the story should focus more on Charles and that plot. But it's sad to see less into the Queen's mind. However, her scenes with her uncle were very emotional.
The storyline choices could have been better/more engaging but 3 that I really enjoyed so far were Aberfan, Charles learning Welsh and Phillip meeting the astronauts. Those were some great character developmental stories. I believe I have one more episode left and then onto season 4.
