I wonder if The Queen and Phillip will watch this?

I'm sure they have heard about it.

reply

I know that it was reported that the Queen saw Helen Mirren play her, but I doubt she will watch this. More likely Anne or Charles might, and I am sure that some members of the extended Royal family will.

reply

I wonder what Charles would think about Philip calling him a girl. Possible spoiler from episode 10.

reply

I was wondering that too. They make Prince Phillip look pretty bad and the Duke and Wallis Simpson are just annoying and hard to watch

reply

I wished they had picked a better looking actor to play Prince Philip, he was swoon worthy in his day.

The actor looks very much like Prince Philip, to me.

Me too. In fact, I remember thinking at first "Was Phillip really that good looking when he was younger?"

reply

indeed. this production went ALL OUT casting handsome prince philip. but i do think that elizabeth found philip to be as attractive as blonde matt smith, as they say she crushed on him from a very young age IRL.

reply

Who knows, but if they do, I wouldn't expect a notice to be posted at the Buck House gates to say so. It is a strange thought, though - what must it be like watching a fictionalized version of yourself re-enacting events you remember enacting more than half a century ago?

reply

And don't forget putting words into your mouth that you probably never said... had arguments you never had...

To me, it would be very disturbing. At 90, she doesn't need to be "disturbed".

reply

Buckingham Palace never comments on these films, but I've heard it said that if the Queen approves of the portrayal, one way of showing it by making some sort of award, so for example Helen Mirren was made a dame. If the Queen had not liked the film, it's unlikely she would, as a relatively ordinary actress, have got that title. So let's watch closely to see if any awards are granted after this series...

I don't think the Queen's 'approval' comes into it at all. Her impartiality has defined her reign, and I doubt that she would break that habit doing something as trivial as dishing out titles to actors (or not). Besides, there were two Dames in this show (Harriet Walter and Eileen Atkins), and like Helen Mirren, they are both highly accomplished stage and screen actors with careers going back decades.

Dude, that is one gay looking signature.

reply

They probably watch it and had a good laugh:

"hah, they got that wrong."

"aw... poor philip, they treating you like a ninny"

"heh Liz, you unedumacated chick you."

reply

I know it's fiction and 60+ years ago but the Elizabeth in the series wouldn't be able to help herself. She'd watch for sure. She cares too much what people think of her.

Phillip would have no patience for it. No boobs.

Most people thought I was a hero for killing Lydia's parrot.

reply

I think they would. It's critical that the Queen understands how she is seen by the people and how the show will influence people's perception of her (and the monarchy). Watching it would be a smart thing to do.

You're right. The Queen does not decide who gets awards like knighthoods, damehoods, OBEs, MBEs etc. The Cabinet Office make up the twice-yearly lists (at New Year and on the Queen's official birthday in June). They then submit the list of names to the Queen, who approves them on the advice of her ministers and presents people with their honours at investiture ceremonies (although Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince William are now doing more of those because of the Queen's age). Helen Mirren was made a dame in 2003, two years before the film The Queen went into production.

reply

She doesn't have to watch the program to see how it portrays her. She can just have an assistant watch and write up a report

reply

Yes, like she did after the Ghana trip where Michael put together that book of news clippings for her. Poor Michael, he was stripped of his mustache and spent the rest of the series breaking bad news to her and putting out fires she or her family members started.

reply

When you think about it, Queen Elizabeth I used to enjoy watching Shakespeare's plays about the scandals pond deceits odd her fairly recent ancestors - although Bill was smart enough not to write about his own Her Majesty.

reply

I read somewhere Princess Eugenie watches the show, but it could have been a tabloid.
