What's better, The Crown or Downton Abbey?

I've only seen a bit, but so far I'm liking the Crown better.

I think because it's about history that I don't really know much about, and that people like Winston Churchill are characters in it.

I liked Downton Abbey, but come on, the most important thing that happened was they threw a dinner party, or Maggie Smith said something sarcastic.

Not that I'm trashing DA, but just saying I'm pretty excited about the Crown.

My favorite episode is 9. I think you'll know why  It's alot better than Downton Abby too.

What's better? Canned pineapple or Ferrari 581 italia?

I have to call it a draw. I REALLY like both shows.

Actors are useless without the power of a good writer's imagination

reply

A draw? I didn't know it was a competition.

reply

I'd say draw as well. I love the rich history of this show, but I like the funny bits of humor that Downton Abby throws in.

Definitely The Crown. Downton Abbey became a soap opera.

reply

Again, not putting it down, but Downton Abbey was a soap opera for a long time. In many ways.

It's not competition, but I like The Crown better n part because it's real history. That I didn't know much about.

I think it's useful to say to friends, try the Crown, it's a bit better than Downton Abbey if you want them to see it.

reply

I'd say The Crown.

While Downton Abbey mostly centers about class, The Crown tells more about power. I like both shows's costume and set designs, but in terms of writing, The Crown is all the way above.

Downton Abbey was, as they said, "Dynasty on Crack". I agree, it was great but only until the end of Season 3. Then, Fellowes started writing just anecdotes. The writing on The Crown is well arranged to make us see a fairy tale, with connections between events and attitudes that seem random, but they're not.

Now, The Crown is beautifully shot, the writing is good, the art direction superb and the acting is great... BUT it is NOT fiction, and we kinda know what will happen with the characters just by going to Wikipedia. I'd say, after watching the whole Season 1, that the series has potential to become the next Downton Abbey if they keep with the good writing.

I have seen all episodes of both series and: The Crown is better by a significant margin for me.

I liked Downton. It was a fun ride. But it was a confection.

The Crown is the real deal.

History shouldn't be only kings, queens, war and politics. Social history is important too. You can learn a lot about the lives of ordinary people in the past by watching Downton.

Totally agree that The Crown is the superior show. I love the historical tie-ins: London Fog, Profumo Scandal, Suez Canal, Marburg files.

Downton Abbey had a brilliant season 1 and 2 but the plot got strained after that. It was a great show in its own right, but lighter and soapy at times.

I like that the point of view stems from the Queen, Prime Minister, and main players. Glad there is not a consistent subplot around kitchen staff, etc which I think detracts from the Victoria series, which is good too. That suited Downton A., Gosford P., Upstairs D. but these dramas do not always have to have this parallel plotline. The Crown occasionally brings in a story about a staff member, like Venetia Scott, but ties it into the broader theme.
