Good ideas, but poorly executed

I was really looking forward to the movie and was excited to watch it. I thought there were a lot of good ideas presented in the movie but I just thought it was really badly executed. I think the script could have used a rewrite or two, and maybe a better director could have done a better job. I just thought the movie relied on too many horror cliches and jump scares.

Agreed! It's a shame James wan didn't direct it or write it. Imo that could of made it great. Alas, for a horror directors debut, it's good.

I'm actually glad Wan didn't direct it. I know he's the most popular horror director right now, but I'm getting tired of his "smiling apparition" imagery. It doesn't scare or give me the creeps at all. I bet he forced Sandburg to give Diana those spiky fingers (much like the Darth Maul demon in Insidious).

At least Sandburg was wise enough to make Diana a shadow figure for 98% of her screen time. Her full-on appearance, which was thankfully only briefly glimpsed, wasn't particularly terrifying, but as a shadow figure in the dark, especially in background shots, she's menacing as hell, and judging by how clearly we saw the demon figure in Insidious, I don't think Wan would have had the restraint to hold back on full shots of Diana if he had directed it.

With this premise the movie could have been so good and it was such a let down.
