Was Rainn Wilson supposed the villain?

I’ve read that Wilson’s character was the human villain of the movie, but I reallt don’t see it. He had a lot of remorse whenever anything goes wrong and does alot to fix bad situations. Did anyone actually find him villainous?

Not in the movie because he pays the ultimate price for his actions but I find him despicable in real life (Haiti, Clinton Foundation, pedophilia jokes on Twitter...).

It's obvious he shows no remorse whatsoever. He tells them that he does, sure, at the same time when he also tells them that they will be rescued. However, none of that is true at all, because he has not sent any message and he want to kill it himself.
His motivation is to avoid lawsuits, which he directly tells one of the others.
