HUH!
Am I the only one who looks at 'steampunk' and doesn't GET IT???? The aesthetic escapes me totally. If there is anything to steampunk - what these teams created was beyond pathetic.
shareAlmost ALL steampunk disappoints me. Only the classic Jules Verne or HG Wells is truly satisfying. Modern steampunk is all about fashion and they completely forget the political conditions that surrounded the true works.
Most of what I've seen storywise is just pathetic, and that's a bummer.
As for fashion, I give the whole subculture about a 4 out of 10. Some people make truly stunning work - most are 19th century Walmart shoppers.
Sadly, the host of this show wore the absolutely most ATROCIOUS outfits every week. There was no indication if she had a background in steampunk or even knew what it was.
I can easily understand Japanese teen elegant goth Lolita style as opposed to sweet Lolita style (ama-loli) and can even appreciate bold and daring accessories stretching the meaning of same - so I hardly think I am clueless. I don't see the insanely refined dandyism at work necessary to 'pull off' steampunk or any such style.
