Disappointed

I watch a few "maker" type shows - Faceoff, Skin Wars, Jim Henson's Creature Shop, etc.
Given the amount of time they had for the first challenge and the number of people on each team, not only did they construct very little but what they did construct was rather lack-luster and boring. I'm a cast member at a Steampunk-style LARP (live action role playing) and I'm always astounded at the level of quality I see in the props the players create - often with little time. As such, I was expecting a lot from people who had a significant amount of resources at their disposal. This first challenge was just kinda pathetic.

There are no teams.
It was depressing to see the lack of teamwork in the teams. If the "minions" spoke up with an idea, the "leader" would have a tantrum about being pressured. I'm sure it was scripted, but isn't there enough interesting going on if they showed the creative process.

What is the "steampunk esthetic"
that they kept nattering about? I expected a late Victorian sense of decorative excess with the future vision of a Jules Verne. Instead, we were told that the construction had to have "steam". Nope! Historically, we can include electricity and lighter than air travel, A lot of the costumes seemed to have more of a post-apocalyptic theme. They portrayed either a grim future or Victorian naughtiness.

Hated the meaningless ram's horns headpiece along with the moon boots.

JW's vehicle must have looked better in person because on screen it just looked like a pile of junk with handlebars and blended in too much with the background.

I whole-heartedly concur!!

I bailed after watching 90% of the first episode. They presented their rooms- and it was just pathetic looking.
I've decorated my apartment better for a steampunk halloween party- and did it by myself in one day. I'm part of a steam punk pirate crew, and they have made more amazing things by themselves with no time or resources than these people did.

They had a team of five, and it was truly awful. Everything about both rooms was cheap and crap looking. The paint jobs were embarassing. It was just embarrassing how little art went into it, how little they pulled off the aesthetic, and then on top of it, how it was all about their terrible personalities and not the fabrication.

Awful. I just can't.
