You would think his co-workers would have been not giving the new manager balloons and the like based on how he got his new position. Then his stuff was out on the curb with a free sign on it.

I'm pretty sure it is supposed to show how uncared for Charlie was by everyone he knows, especially his wife and step-kids, who have absolutely no respect for him at all.
