Commercials

I DVR'd it and tried to watch 1/4 asleep, but was put off by the frequency of commercial interruptions. I hardly watch non cable television - is this representative of the new n
orm for commercial breaks?

reply

Many cable networks are worse. They'll put a two-hour movie in a three-hour time slot, and broadcast it as 15 minutes of movie, 10 minutes of commericals, 15 minutes of movie, 10 minutes of commercials, etc. I've gotten so used to it, that when I watch anything on Movieplex, which does not have commerical breaks, I get antsy every so often to have a chance to go off and do something else for five or ten minutes.

I showed them, by jimminy! I recently bought an antenna to pick up the over-the-air digital signals. I was paying over eighty dollars a month for a lineup of channels (Syfy, History, Discovery, Spike, and many others) that I used to like, but almost never watch now. After I got the antenna hooked up, I experimented for two weeks with not using the cable service at all, and found out that most of what I watch these days I could still watch anyway. So I had Comcast cut my service down to basic, only because there are still a couple of local channels I can't pick up. That costs about thirty dollars a month, which is within my budget.

Last September I bought a computer that would stream video smoothly, so I've been able to pick up things I do want to watch from various websites. I do have to be careful, though, not to subscribe to so many online services that it eats up all my savings.

After more than a month, I still rarely switch over to the cable service, but I'll keep it as a backup for a while. If nothing changes by next spring, I'll very likely cut the cable entirely.

Silo,
I switched to a $10 antenna too...screw them. I used to like TV Land but they would have 3 minutes of chopped up show...then 7 minutes of commercials...forget it.
