All the 'Baby Making' Talk...

Love how all the blame was put on the poor husband. Like he ravished her all day long and kept getting her pregnant. It takes 2 to make a baby.

But like any good Christian wife she is supposed to yield to his wishes. Do the Duggars come to mind? ๎€Œ

Why is it that poor people are the ones who have more kids than the rich people (ie. Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and their wives)? The rich too busy getting rich and the poor people not working ridiculous hours and more of the time.
The poor should realize that they can't afford children and keep it in their pants. One or two is plenty. Double digits is going overboard. Even for rich people. Its like they're trying to repopulate the world all by them selves.

OVERPOPULATION...is going to be getting worse every second.

P.S.
I'm poor and childless (women want men with money...who wouldn't?)

P.P.S.
Where's all the sugar-mommas at? Holla!

Back in the old days (and in this movie), farmers had lots of kids to help with the farmwork. In the movie, the dad pulled the sons out of school for a while because he needed help and at one point all the children had to help when the crops were infected with worms.

The movie takes place in 1955, during a time when poor folks couldn't afford to own, the recently invented TV set or have access to birth control. Folks went to church and worked their farms

There's an old song from the 20s called "Ain't We Got Fun?)

One thing you can be sure of
The rich get rich and the poor get children.

I grew up in the 50s/60s and I knew a lot of people who had a bunch of kids. The mom and kids would be in church on Sunday morning while the dad refused to go to church.

I realized early on that the people who seemed to have the most problems were the ones with a bunch of kids, so I made up my mind when I was about 14 that I'd only have one kid, and that's what I had.

You seem to have no understanding of farm life of poor folks in that age, kids are born to be workers.

reply

Are you talking to me?

I lived on a farm until I was 18, so I think I do know about farm life.

None of your business how many kids other people have if they raise them themselves and stay off welfare.

reply

I guess because when you are poor then that is the cheapest entertainment! LOL I remember whenever there was a power blackout due to bad winter weather they would always predict a baby boom nine months later...and it usually happened!

Don't bother sweating over your bills, in the end we all wind up in the hole!

In poor rural farming families of the past, having many children was an investment in the future as those children would grow up to be free farm labor.

Then there was the lack of access to effective birth control or sex education.

I don't know what the excuse is today. Stupidity and lack of self control I would guess.

reply

On the farm you got your sex education when dealing with the animals.

reply

Well today, you also get more money from the government the more kids you pop out.

I thought it was distasteful for Dolly to make her parents' private marital relationship a central part of the plot. People don't usually write about their own parents in that way.

reply

Dolly has known for many years what was causing all those babies and has every right to include it in the story. In family with 8 kids you can't really get around it.

reply

There was nothing distasteful shown at all about her parents relationship.
