Not all that bad

A lot of people seemed to dislike this two parter. I quite enjoyed it - particularly as the story was told more or less truthfully without silly sub romances and other nonsense that usually afflict otherwise "true" stories.
My gripes included the fact that Joanne Froggatt was too attractive by far for the part of Mary Anne who was a terminally plain, not to say, ugly woman, and the unconvincing sex scenes. I agree with one poster who said that Joanne Froggatt seemed bored with the part - although she may have been trying to communicate the cold emotionless nature of the original woman.

I don't get the hate for this mini series, but it is a slow one. It's probably not a true telling of Mary Ann Cotton's story, but Joanne is playing it as a subtle sociopath. Her first husband should have never told her about life insurance...

Thank you for responding. I don't think any historical story can be absolutely true - we can't know conversations and private feelings of individuals - but the bones of the story were pretty much accurate. I can't understand how her constant insurance claims were never deemed suspicious - I can only assume that it was because life was so hard in those days and poverty and starvation led to all kinds of fatal diseases.

Yes that was the one incident I could not understand. When she was claiming the insurance no alarm bells were ringing.

She went by a number of aliases, which also probably helped cover her trail with the insurance companies.
