English title

"The Last King" is a pretty stupid title for a movie from a country who's still ruled by a constitutional monarchy. It was not even the last king of that war, there were about 20 more in the civil war alone. I suppose they used this title because they thought it sounded "cool", but I beg to differ, it sounds extremely clicheed, and it makes no sense in relations to the movie. Norwegian ingenuity at its finest, people.

If the protagonists of this film were not successful, the infant in the film would have been The Last King. I imagine that is why.

reply

Trust me, there were no shortages of claimants and pretenders during that era. It would not have been the last king. I still believe this stems from poor imagination rather than having a real reason, it seems they've tried to give it a title that works abroad. Problem is that it is a cliché.

Really? Hmmm What tile would you prefer?

Baby smugglers?
Illegitimate King's Men?
The Bastard who would be King?
The Birchlegs?
The Birkebeiners without Borders?

I dreamt of a roaring river and a woman that was a fish. Dead she drifted, with red tears...

Ski or die :)

I was thinking of:
Vikings on Skis (oh wait, they weren't Vikings)
Two Men and a Baby
Snow Wars
The Next Håkon
Skis, Axes, and Bows
Downhill Racer (oops, already used)

But seriously, as others have pointed out, Birkebeinerne would make no sense to American audiences so they picked something short, catchy, and marketable. It would be like an American movie about Revolutionary War soldiers called Minutemen, would not translate well.

It's not "Norwegian ingenuity", it's marketing for US consumers. Which is understandable.

For those (like me) who aren't encumbered with profound knowledge of the history behind it, it was an enjoyable film. Athletic actors and the babies did a good job, too!
