The cameras following him made no sense

They shot it in a documentary style to shoot it cheaper. But from a story standpoint, It made no sense. Melvin didn't want to go to doctors and clearly didn't want the world knowing about his powers, so why agree to a documentary about his life? Not to mention him breaking dozens of laws on camera. The director could've just shot mostly handheld without the gimmick of the documentary and the movie would've still worked.
