I thought he did a great job. Loved the subtle effects. I thought the ending was a little underwritten, but that's my only nitpick. Well, that and the church scene. I pretty much got exactly themovie i hoped for.

Imho, the ending is not important. The familly business is not the point.
Everyhing else is.
On a gut feeling I'd say that this movie shows in details what Victor Schoelcher meant when he wrote his dreadfull and cynical opinions about slavery, back in the XIXth century.
His opinion was that slavery was horrible, and should be abolitioned... as horrible as the slaves. To 'quote' him (actually, I translate it) death should do the job...
He meant it, there was no way he would have granted citizenship to those who suffered from it even after the business had stop and hey would be free. He wished them a slow death.
Now, what else can one expect from someone who was a member of Thier's administration ?
Dreadfull.
