It took cues from the now obscurer Kiss comics that took cues from Jack Kirby.

The whole Kissteria part in itself felt like the kind of "adventure novel gone nuts" feel of the likes of Thundarr the Barbarian (that Jack Kirby also worked on) and the few series Hanna Barbera did like it. If you know those shows well that whole part of the movie really should have been giving you flashbacks. It's the first we've seen of that kind of style in a long time.
