Highest grossest film in China and an IMDB of 6.8.....serious!?!?!?

I get that it was made by Chinese filmmakers. I understand that it's Chinese/Asian comedy. I am Asian and I've watch many Asian films/miniseries in my lifetime. I even understood the musical number reference to a classic Hong Kong miniseries from the 80's! Yet, I found the film cheesy and just plain horrible!

Is all the hooplah for real? Or, did I just not get "it"?

Well Titanic was a piece of garbage and that thing made a ton of record money at the time. Just saying.

reply

Titanic was hardly garbage, it might not be to your taste, genre wise, but garbage it wasn't.

reply

Transformers would have been a better example of polishing turds.

reply

Yeah, it was garbage, Titanic, that is.

reply

Genre preference has nothing to do with it. I agree that garbage is too harsh of a word, but there is a lot about Titanic that is clearly subpar.

reply

I agree. To say Titanic was overrated is a gross understatement. While it would be an en exaggeration to say it was the worst movie I ever had the misfortune of watching, it certainly ranks in the bottom half. In terms of artistic merit, in no conceivable way does Titanic warrant being the highest grossing movie of all time, globally, until Avatar took it's place.

I haven't seen The Mermaid yet (I was just checking IMDB to see if it was worth buying -- it just hit the shelves at my nearest Walmart this week) but, if it's even half as good as Chow's Kung Fu Hustle, I have no problem believing it's better than Titanic and, therefore, no problem believing it's the new highest grossing movie in China.

-- Be unreasonable.

reply

"Titanic" had nothing on the most overrated POS ever: "Avatar"...otherwise known as "Pocahantas In SPAAAAAAAAAAAACE!!"

;D

reply

Calling "Titanic" garbage is an insult to garbage. Most of the highest grossing movies of all time are really *beep* and a lot of the biggest bombs in history were really good. You can't judge the quality of a movie based on how much money it made.

reply

Agreed. Titanic was trash.

reply

So what if you're Asian.. do you live in China? The movie was perfect for the 17-30 movie-going crowd here, which is massive.

this just show folks in china still culturally and intellectually still far behind the rest of the world, simpletons are easily entertain by lame cheesy slap stick jokes and low quality cgi effects around current popular local stars. Its a formula for instant hits, have u seen the average tv shows in china? its either propaganda war movies of constantly being oppress or slap stick clowns behaving crudely. They still have a far far journey ahead to evolve over their long suppress communism cultures.

reply

Exactly what hwoarang45 said.

Even a simple fart joke is overwhelmingly hilarious....if you have the sensibilities of an 8 year old.

This film was cheesy, silly, and geared towards mental children who are looking for mindless passive entertainment of the lowest form. No wonder it did so well over there.

Most of our films are almost as ridiculous, and we don't even live under an oppressive communist government. At least they have an excuse.

reply

Maybe you lads should try turning on the subtitles?

reply

Do you really think they can read?

reply

Your comment just shows that you are culturally and intellectually far behind the rest of the world.

reply

I have seen everything he's done, this is the worst piece of garbage, including cj7, he has pumped out

reply

To be fair, all people have different movie tastes. I personally am not really a fan of the Star Wars movies, as they aren't very interesting to me. However, I thought this was one of the funniest movies I had ever seen. Some films just appeal to different people.

reply

I'm a huge Stephen Chow fan but seriously, this film is pure garbage .
Chinese movie-goers loved Transformers, hardly a surprise this movie made *beep* ton of money over there.

reply

I hate the Transformers movies. I grew up watching the cartoons but think the movies were horrendous. However, the Transformers movies are Citizen Kane compared to The Mermaid!! LOL

reply

I didn't think it was garbage but it did feel really quite weak compared to the majority of his other films, massively disappointed.

reply

Well more intelligent critics have rated it at 92% and all 25 cannot be wrong.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mei_ren_yu/

reply

So because I found it disappointing I'm less intelligent than others who liked it? Interesting.

Not to mention that those critics haven't rated it at 92%, just 92% of critics that are followed by rottentomatoes liked it more than disliked it. Impressive score though.

reply

Considering how many critics give favorable reviews to moronic releases like The Avengers, they can no longer be trusted.

reply

What proof is there that critics are intelligent? Based on their ability to tell me what is good, they are stupid.

I once did not want to see a movie because the critics said it is awful. I went with a group of people that wanted to see it and now it is among my favorite movies. I don't like most movies that critics say are wonderful.

We are not in China where the government tells the citizens what to think. Maybe some day the government will control us but not yet.

reply

I can eagerly watch subtitled movies.

For instance, I adore "Kung-Fu Hustle" in the SUBBED version!

This... was just painfully dumb.

Your post has made me think about the correlation between popularity and quality. It seems to me that there is a minor inverse relationship. I probably don't even like 2% of the 100 top grossing movies in the US, with the exception of movies like Jaws, The Exorcist, and maybe a few others. Especially today; what sells today I have little interest in. Guardians of the Galaxy? No, thank you. Titanic? No. Star Wars? No. etc.

Which brings me to another point: I am starting to question the value of the IMDB rating system, personally, as an indicator of quality movies. Take the movie "Shower" for example. An excellent Chinese slice of life movie. Easily a 9 out of 10. But it, like so many very good movies, gets a 7.5. It seems like almost every movie gets between a 6 and a 7.8. That is not much of a variance if you ask me. IMDB's scale is 0 - 10, yet almost all movies, which incredible variance in quality, get grouped in between 2 of the 1- values (6 and 8). Even the truly amazing "Wild Strawberries" gets only an 8.2. This masterpiece doesn't even get a 9??!!

I don't know what the issue is. I wish there was a club of like minded people that did the ratings. These everyone can rate sites like IMDB don't seem to be very helpful. Jaws gets an 8! An 8??!! Jaws is a 10, period, there is no arguing it.

Che cosa dici tu, Paisan...

This movie was very similar in theme to "Avatar", which was also absurdly overrated.

But it took longer for people to realize it with "Avatar". NOW they get it, though!

reply

You seem to have a problem with opinions.

reply

This site is mostly used by US-American users. They are not very famous for being cultural or socially open minded (no offence, i know some us-americans which are very nice guys).
You can be sure their are even a few guys which rate this movie one star because it´s chinese, so, i wouldn´t make my mind up.
The ratings for Asian or European Movies is not very accurate.

reply

Yeah exactly, the amount of arrogance of the people in this thread is astounding, especially considering Avatar is the highest grossing movie in the west. People here are really close-minded and have no understanding of the world from their little bubble of influence.

Btw, I'm an Australian who has been living in China for the past 3 years and the reason this movie was so big was very similar to Avatar. I was in Aus when Avatar was released and saw that in the Cinema and I was in China when Mermaid was released and also saw that in the Cinema (even though I couldn't really understand it at the time - my chinese is terrible), but those who think this is garbage have no concept of how a movie makes money. Money does not mean it's a masterpiece. Look at shawshank or blade runner those movies were considered flops when they were released...

People here make sweeping generalisations of the Chinese are pure intellectual cul-de-sacs that shouldn't talk about things they know nothing about

reply

he reason this movie was so big was very similar to Avatar.

Yes... and the problem is that for English-speaking audiences, most of the gilding has rubbed off of "Avatar" and it now bears the dubious distinction of being the most overrated movie of all time.

"Avatar" was filled with one-dimensional characters and an absurd plot with a ridiculously cartoonish outcome... all things I noted immediately after being dragged to the movie by my aunt... which I have still not forgiven her for.

I too saw almost at once how similar "Mermaid" was and immediately lost any and all interest in it.

reply

I only watched the last 20 mintues, but I could tell that the movie was absurd. It would compare it to a Sharknado-type film. The acting was horrible and the FX was even worse! How this can get such a high rating is beyond me. They must have low standards in China when it comes to movies.

Get away from her, you BITCH!!!
