Brilliant acting - even if it opens old wounds...

I thought the show was superbly done with great acting from one of the best ensembles of actors ever. The problem, on looking through the different comment threads though, is that the story opens up many of the old wounds in Ireland for a lot of viewers. Every Irishman has an opinion about the Rebellion, not one of which will ever be changed.

Kudos to a great cast! 

The wounds have never been healed. How could they? All these years later and Ireland is still not fully free. The first British colony is still a colony. That's all kinds of wrong. The Irish have fought colonization even longer than the Native Americans. British treatment of Ireland has been shameful as has American treatment of its indigenous people. The effects of colonization continue for generations and generations. The British are responsible for so many political troubles that occurred after they finally left or were driven out of places.

I agree with you 100%. However, it's not just the British or the Americans. Every colonial empire has left centuries of despair in their wake after being defeated, disappearing, or crumbling. France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Japan et al have all left devastation behind them.

Oh, absolutely, supermachead. England was such a successful colonizer, so the impact of her empire was devastating. All colonizers have harmed, however.
