Why not Quantum Leap, Time Tunnel, Doctor Who or Primeval? Or hundreds of other TV-series and movies that have used time travel?

Tv has been using various gimmicks to visit "the weird world of the week" since the 50s. Time travel, space travel, dimensional travel... doesn't really matter which mechanism they use, the formula is the same. What matters is how strong the characters are, how clever the worlds are, and how compelling is the over-arching story line. Comparing this to Sliders is like comparing Star Trek to Lost in Space.
If you really want to trace it to the root, head back to the novel Gullivers Travels from 1729. Or head back to the 14th century for Dante's Inferno. Or let it go. Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Or not.
