Casting of Alexandre

Honestly, couldn't they just cast someone who is actually this size instead of a "normal" tall guy? He doesn't look like a small person (not even one with proportionate dwarfism), but maybe that was the whole point, so that the love story doesn't look too "weird" and the viewers always have in the back of their minds that he's actually a "normal" "handsome" guy.
Either the filmmakers should have gotten the guts to actually cast a little person (but somehow they hardly ever get picked to play heartthrobs) or they should have made him at least about 5' tall (with her being 5'9" that's still a big issue for many women who would never date a man less tall than they are).
The movie comes across as spineless and insulting (not just to actual little people). Is this the new blackface?

My first thoughts were very much along those lines--the film seems to undermine its own message by casting a tall guy as a midget. Of course, any studio is looking for its films to succeed at the box office and I don't know how many dwarves have the recognition of Jean Dujardin. The character also seemed to be unrealistically perfect (except for his height) and maybe it wasn't easy to find a dwarf with those rugged good looks. But I do think it would have been a better film with a little lead actor.
