The incest angle...(spoiler)

As was mentioned somewhere on here, in the movie Damian gave off an extremely unsettling, sexual vibe toward Audrina, and there was a somewhat returned sexual vibe by Vera when she leaned provocatively over him at the table and intensely kissed his cheek. Also, her line to Audrina about "what that man is capable of," etc.

Now for the book fans, we know "what he was capable of" was more about the lies and manipulations. There was never even a hint of incest on Damian's part. But in the movie, it almost was plausible until the big secret came out that both Audrina and Vera were sexual abuse victims of Damian.

So, do you think that was deliberate in the "movie twist" sense, or did that come about naturally that once the book was adapted to a movie script, that undertone surfaced on its own?

reply

I thought that incest angle was a little off-putting in the movie. In the book, while Damian could be ruthless, overbearing and sometimes violent, it was never an incestual vibe.

reply

Exactly, I agree. I just can't help but wonder why that happened in the movie, when there was really no incest vibe at all in the book (although Vera was very demonstratively sexual in front of Audrina, both in the book and the movie.)

reply

Yes, Vera was always out there sexually but she was the only one.
In the book, Damian always went for women closer to his age, I never saw him interested in either Audrina or Vera in an inappropriate way. I guess Lifetime likes that incest aspect to a lot of VC Andrews stories and it was subtly written in.

I really missed the presence of Billie in this movie. I feel she was important for Audrina's growing process. Missed Sylvia, too. Damian was always surrounded by women and it was unfortunate how they all met their demise except Audrina and Sylvia.

reply

I agree with y'all. I hated the incest vibe with the dad. The book has him at 6' 5" and it he is very controlling figure but that is it.

I missed Billie so much. I love her character and she such a powerful figure in Audrina's growing up and emotional development. Sad that was left out.

it made me really when they went that route and not happy when they didn't put sylia and billie in the movie also loved the book

reply

Okay, I'm sick right now, so my ability to pay attention is greatly diminished, but when during the movie did they reveal that Damian abused Audrina and Vera?! I totally missed that!

I also noticed the sexual undercurrent when Damian was around Audrina and was disappointed (read: felt really uncomfortable) in that during the movie, but I thought it was just me. I didn't realize that any abuse was revealed.

And despite that, the movie followed the book in having Audrina stay and Vera returning?! Just wow.

No, that did not happen...what I said was, the way it was played, if there was no book in existence and this was JUST a movie, or to viewers who'd never read the book, it SEEMED like Audrina and Vera MAY have been sexual abuse victims of Damian.

I was just contemplating whether this was all deliberate on the part of the script writers (like a red herring in a mystery) or if it just naturally came about when the content of the book was adapted to the screen. Because in the book by itself, there was absolutely no hint of that, no insinuation, nothing.

Oh, my, I crack myself up! See? I told you that I'm ill, thus addle-brained at the moment. I misinterpreted your meaning here: "But in the movie, it almost was plausible until the big secret came out that both Audrina and Vera were sexual abuse victims of Damian." Thanks for the clarification, JC_Aliss! 

I think you're right about it happening naturally. Damian was intense in the book, but I found him much more intense—and in a different way—in this adaptation. I couldn't tell if it was the actor or the direction, but he certainly brought that incestuous undercurrent to the role.

What I took from the book is that Vera flirts (and sleeps with, when she can) with men to get her way. It's the only way she knows how to deal with men. So, she's a flirt with all of them, even Damian. I don't think he ever slept with her, but he was always kind of on eggshells around her, because he knew she was aware that he was probably her real father (and so she knew Damian had cheated on his wife / fiancé with Vera's mother). He was probably worried about all the things she might tell or do to Audrina, so he put up with her antics.
