Did this movie take place in the 70s?

I was actually a bit confused as to when it was set, as well. The book takes place in the 1960s/70s, I guess the film did too, especially since it was absent of modern markers (cell phones, iPhones, etc) but the way Vera dressed seemed really contemporary to me. Overall it probably takes place in the '60s or '70s as you said, with a few anachronistic costume choices??

The novel spans about fifteen years, from age 9 to about 24ish, so assuming it ends around 1982, when the novel was published, it would have begun around 1966.

I got her age at 24 because in the last 100 pages or so it's stated that Arden's 26 and I think he's a couple years older than her.
